A majority of Super Mario 64 has been recreated in Super Mario Maker 2 by one talented user. Super Mario Maker 2 is almost one year old, and still going strong. The latest update released last month, bringing a number of new additions. One of the biggest is something that has been highly requested for awhile: worlds. Now, players can create their own maps. Although it’s disappointing this is the last major update, there is enough material to keep players busy for a very long time. The possibilities are endless, as evidenced in a world dedicated to Super Mario 64.
There are reports going around saying Nintendo is planning on remastering past Super Mario titles, including Super Mario 64. That remains to be seen, but in the meantime, players can play a 2D recreation of Super Mario 64’s levels (via Twinfinite). Created by Super Mario Maker 2 user SeanDreyer, the levels recreate the iconic courses of Super Mario 64. The entire recreation is showcased by BeardBear in the video below. SeanDreyer’s Mario Maker 2 ID is DRC-JGT-5WF, for those who want to play the levels.
Impressively, SeanDreyer manages to recreate Mario 64 using the materials available. Whomp’s Fortress looks accurate, and while quicksand doesn’t exist in Mario Maker 2, SeanDreyer uses conveyors to achieve the effect in Shifting Sand Land. Of course, having the slide theme from Mario 64 itself is handy for recreating.
Super Mario Maker 2 continues to impress with what’s possible under the right creative hands. Many fantastic levels have been uploaded, and will likely continue for years to come.
