While British television is perhaps best known internationally for BBC series like Doctor Who and Sherlock, which have carved out communities on social media platforms like Tumblr, a video game based on Peaky Blinders was announced in April that serves as a prequel to the period crime drama. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a top-down puzzle adventure game that will be releasing August 20 for PC and consoles, and is available to pre-order now according to a new trailer put out Thursday.
The Peaky Blinders: Mastermind trailer intersperses footage from the show with gameplay that asks players to solve environmental puzzles and mess with tactical time-travel route planning based on lead character Tommy Shelby’s “soldier’s minute.” It also includes voiceover narration recorded by Cillian Murphy, who plays Shelby in the popular show.
Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is being developed by FuturLab in collaboration with the show’s creator Steven Knight, so fans can likely expect a quality narrative that will be considered canon to the series which has been on the air since 2013. According to the game’s official synopsis, it follows the rise of Shelby as he “uncovers a sinister plot” to put the Peaky Blinders out of business, which FuturLab Game Director James Marsden said will do a service to the IP by capitalizing on what makes it special.
FuturLab is not the only developer working on games related to Peaky Blinders. Maze Theory, currently developing two Doctor Who games, is also creating a VR title called Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom for 2021.
Peaky Blinders: Mastermind will be available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One August 20 for £19.99.
