Nobody ever reads the Terms of Service agreement. They should, because those agreements contain legal ramifications, but nobody ever does because life is too short. Companies obligated to obtain your consent to their TOS are well aware that virtually everyone simply scrolls to the bottom and hits “Yes,” and sometime have a little fun with the text. Some Terms of Service include jokes. Others offer cash awards to anyone who mails a key phrase to a specific address. And in the case of streaming service Peacock, there’s a recipe for chocolate cake.
To be fair, the TOS is very upfront about the recipe, declaring its intent in the very first line of the page:
Welcome to the Peacock Terms of Use! Here, you’ll find answers to your burning legal questions about our service (plus a hidden cake recipe!). We know you can’t wait to get started, so without further ado, take it away, legal peacocks!
Sure enough, if you make it all the way down to Section 9 (Third-Party Authentication, Third Party Services), you will be gifted with the following “very delicious, Peacock-approved, just-like-Grandma-used-to-make chocolate cake recipe:”
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Grease and flour cake pan Cream butter, add sugar and egg, and mix thoroughly Pour boiling water over cut up chocolate. Once melted, drain excess water into a cup to be added later alternately with flour. Add melted chocolate and vanilla to the butter, sugar, and egg mixture. Then, mix together dry ingredients. Fold in wet ingredients and left-over chocolate water into the dry mixture. Batter will seem thin, but do not add flour. Pour into greased and floured pan. Bake 30 – 40 minutes
