With the PC launch off to a rocky start, players around the world have been reporting issues with Destiny 2 instantly banning them for using third-party software in-game. Unfortunately, it’s not just cheaters that are suffering here, as programs such as Fraps and Discord are getting players banned from the game permanently, and with no way to dispute the claim currently available.
Across the Destiny 2 community, reports are piling in from players who have been permanently banned from the newly-launched shooter simply for having some sort of overlay active in-game. Fraps, Mumble, and Discord, have all been responsible for the ban-hammer being dropped, for the crime of running an overlay on the shooter’s screen. Those who try and capture game footage using OBS or XSPLIT are having similar issues and, according to Bungie’s own website, there are no options available for disputing these restrictions.
This is certainly going to cause problems for the Destiny 2 PC player base, as even hardware monitoring software such as MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision XOC can lead to a ban, as well as any other program that has code injection. It’s clear that Bungie is simply trying to prevent cheating in its best-selling title, but it seems the primarily console-based developer isn’t exactly sure how to build an effective anti-cheat.
“Permanent account bans are only implemented with rigorous checking to ensure that the innocent are not punished alongside the guilty. Bungie does not comment on or discuss individual account restriction or bans.”
Those players who still want to communicate with other members of their fireteam are now forced to find some safer means of doing so, although using Discord without an overlay active has proven to be relatively safe so far. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to tell exactly what is going to end up leading to a ban, and the online forums contain more than just a few Guardians who have been banned for using default programs that they didn’t even know were running.
It’s not a good start for PC players and, although the platform does boast an unlimited frame rate, having high performance is going to be meaningless if the fanbase can’t get online. It looks like Bungie will have to break its ’no comment’ policy for the near future, or risk losing all its PC players in a matter of days.
Destiny 2 is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
