Ponpu - from indie developer Purple Tree Studio and publisher Zordix Publishing - is an upcoming party game that meshes classic gameplay mechanics in crazy new ways. Now, it turns out that multiple players will be able to get in on the action all at once.

Although Ponpu will come with an “epic campaign with massive bosses” for single players to take on, Purple Tree Studio recently announced in a Steam update that the game will also receive a fully online multiplayer mode when the game releases later this year.

In Ponpu, players take on the role of a messenger for the almighty Duck-God (who also happened to created the entire universe), as they venture on a quest to take out their siblings and prevent them from destroying the world.

Gameplay takes place in the form of exploding eggs that seems to share similarities with the Bomberman series of games, while other platforming mechanics also appear to play a major role. The game itself has a charmingly refreshing art style with detailed levels and character designs, specifically speaking to the crazy-looking bosses that players will encounter.

Ponpu’s online multiplayer mode will feature three different modes: Team Deathmatch, in which the last duck standing takes the victory; Coin Chase, with the winner being the duck who collects the most coins; and Color Fight, which seems to be a 2D take on Splatoon. Players can expect the final version of Ponpu to feature everything that they would expect from online multiplayer, including matchmaking and rankings.

The update post mentions that community feedback was one of the driving factors for having online multiplayer ready at launch, stating:

“We received so much positive feedback from the community, and noticed that a lot of people were requesting the ability to play together online. We’re super happy to announce that our publisher greenlighted to make Ponpu bigger, better, stronger, and more connected!”

While no official release date has been revealed yet, Ponpu is expected to release on PC via Steam sometime this fall.
