The Paper Mario series may span six games and counting, but it’s one of those gaming legacies which has lulled favourably in the eyes of its fans. The series features paper cut-outs in a 3D environment, but Nintendo gave the games’ characters a personality to reckon with. Some are witty and calm while others are rude and belligerent, but all of them are reliable and unforgettable. Case in point, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

The Thousand-Year Door is the second game in the Paper Mario series, and it follows the original in its adventures where Mario recruits eccentric partners to aid in his quests. Each partner is a mixed bag of usefulness as they fight tough bosses with their added personal mysteries. As the player discovers their partners’ stories while unraveling their personalities, they’ll also realize just how much they have in common with these animated figurines in terms of personalities. Without further delay, here are all eight partners from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door sorted by their zodiac signs.

12 ARIES: Madame Flurrie

Aries are the rams born of electric energy. Madam Flurrie is a manifestation of bombastic confidence and aggression; perfect candidature for a sun sign that has a ram for its trait representation. Though, she’s a little selfish and impatient much like our fellow Aries.

Her impulsiveness is apparent when she shows her affection towards Mario with her kisses that heal. Flurrie might make it seem that all Aries are nothing-but-fluff and difficult to discern, but she’s kind of heart with a passion, if a little flaunty.

11 TAURUS: Admiral Bobbery

Taurus has Venus as its ruling planet. The Roman goddess of love and beauty presents a striking equal to Admiral Bobbery’s. At least in the love department. Bobbery’s lifelong determination and loyalty to the memory of his late wife is a true representation of a Taurus’ persistence.

Taurean determination can be a tad much as evident by Bobbery’s refusal to take to the seas for years until Mario shows him a letter from his wife convincing him otherwise. Melt this Taurean’s self-imposed pain and he will help out in every way he can.

10 GEMINI: Yoshi Kid

Gemini: the epitome of cunning youthfulness and versatility, often to the point of superficiality. Yoshi Kid is a mirror reflection of a Gemini with his spunky attitude.

He’s young and boisterous, unafraid like a teenager. His versatility is fabulous with 4 power-up abilities besides helping Mario across large gaps with flying leaps. His youthfulness is downright invigorating.

9 CANCER: Koops

Koops is a somewhat timid fellow who is emotional and loving; a sure sign of a Cancer sun-sign. Koops’ Cancerian traits are best showcased in his emotional and loving reunion with his father and in his almost clingy love and desire for his girlfriend, Koopie Koo.

He joins you in your quest to impress Koopie Koo, but isn’t ever distracted. His reliability and usefulness is a hallmark of the Cancer sign.

8 LEO: Madame Flurrie

Spoiled and attention-seeking, Madame Flurrie personifies Leos. She loves the attention. Not a moment of hesitation in any situation and always a step ahead in talking and doing.

A Leo’s determination and sass reflect in Flurrie’s attitude all through the game. Those traits are exactly what make Leos a productively faithful – almost loving – friend.

7 VIRGO: Koops

Once again, Koop scoops the spotlight even with his modest and shy nature. Virgos are diligent and meticulous. Much like Koops’ persistent efforts at impressing his girlfriend.

He’s conservative like Virgos, too, but mostly in the sense that he decides to marry Koopie Koo and run for mayor instead of hitting on Mario as Flurrie does.

6 LIBRA: Ms. Mowz

Ms. Mowz is a charismatic and flirtatious little Libra with a heart-shaped tail. Libras are known to be urbane and charming much in the way Ms. Mowz carries herself: grandly and enigmatically with her masquerade mask.

Her self-indulgence often shows in her weak attacks and her relatively useless talent of pointing the player towards the general direction of a collectible you might chance upon. A little vain much like the myth of its zodiac’s ruling planet, Venus.

5 SCORPIO: Flavio

Ahh, the true embodiment of the worst of an Aquarius and a Scorpio. If one matches the intractable perverseness of an Aquarius with the jealous and compulsive pitfalls of a Scorpio, you end up with Flavio: a temporary character in Mario’s party who boasts endlessly of his bravery. Alas, he has nothing to show for his bravery, nor does he intend to show any of it, delegating all adventures to Mario and his party.

Suffice it to say, his time spent not adventuring is spent tooting his own horn of praises as he flashes anger at anyone who challenges his beliefs. Belligerent and useless. He’s a Scorpio all right, but in the shallowest, worst possible sense of the sign. If anything, this is a character most will not relate to in any sense.

4 SAGITTARIUS: Admiral Bobbery

With a constant desire to explore the ends of the world, it’s hard to decouple the Sagittarius in Admiral Bobbery. He likes being at sea and enjoys it to the point of being careless with blind optimism. Players might want to keep a tissue handy as Sagittarian restlessness partially results in the demise of his wife.

The freedom-loving hardy fool is only a step away from his long-lost optimism as the player finds his wife’s letter absolving him of any part in his wife’s death. Quite the bombastic Sagittarius he is!

3 CAPRICORN: Admiral Bobbery

Once again, Admiral Bobbery takes on the characteristics of another sun sign, partly due to the lack of any more partners but mostly because he is an all-encompassing beacon of wholesomeness. His self-control is obvious from his years of reluctance to sail the seas – a product of his own misery at his wife’s death. He never takes on another wife like a tradition abiding family-man that Capricorns can be. Akin to Pikachu’s loyalty to Ash, Bobbery never moves on from his wife.

For a sea-loving sailor such as he, his decision to stay away from the waters can be seen either as a mark of his insane discipline or as a showcase of his Capircornian pessimism. Either way, Bobbery makes the most memorable partner in the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

2 AQUARIUS: Goombella

Aquarians are known to be independent. Their intellect shows in their affable nature and how easily they make friends. Goombella is a lively one. She is outspoken and casual to the point of breaking the fourth wall, never hesitating to talk and make new buddies.

As outgoing as people under the Aquarius sign are, they are given to loyalty and a soft spot. Traits that Goombella shows verily, especially as she grows affectionate towards Mario towards the end of their adventure. There’s never a boring moment with her!

1 PISCES: Vivian

Those under the Pisces sign are a rather odd mix of imaginative idealism mixed with compassion, and selfless sympathy. Vivian personifies those traits with her shy nature, but her kindness and compassion show in her capacity to forgive others.

Her intuitive Piscean nature flourishes as she grows closer to the adventuring party of Mario and she repairs her sour relationships with her sisters, gaining confidence in herself, which is not unlike someone under the Pisces sign - a fitting close to the wheel of sun signs!
