Games seem to love teasing players by showing them an item or treasure just out of reach early on in the game that, try as you might, you just cannot reach just yet. You might need a new ability, item, tool, or character of some sort that you won’t get until later that you need to bring back. That is exactly the case with the tantalizing treasure chest you can spot on the second floor of a mansion in Toad Town in Paper Mario: The Origami King. This particular chest is protected by a locked door and a gap you’ll need to overcome, and the process isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Follow our guide to finally reveal the sweet treasure inside.
The process is easy enough to accomplish once you know what to do, but actually figuring it all out can be a bit of a head-scratcher. We’ve broken it down into two main steps you can easily follow.
Step 1: Rescue The Mansion’s Owner
First things first, we need to rescue the owner of the Toad Town mansion if we want to unlock that door. The owner has gotten himself into some trouble way out in Shroom City, AKA Snif City, which means you’ll have to progress through the game until you make it to the Scorching Sandpaper Desert.
Once you’ve cleared the Red and Blue Streamers and made it this far, you can find our target toad stuck on the city sign right at the entrance. Getting him down takes a bit of lateral thinking, so start by going to the first building you come to inside the city and toward the save point. If you pass by it and go to the back of the building from that side you will find a stack of crates you can use to reach the roof. From the roof you’ll notice a seesaw just waiting for you to leap on. Just make sure to line yourself up before jumping since the depth can be a little hard to judge.
Now just head back to the gates and give the Toad a helpful smack with your hammer to save him and send him on his way.
Step 2: Reach The Chest
Go ahead and head through the nearest pipe to fast travel back to Toad Town to find the Toad relaxing in his mansion. Now that you’ve rescued him he’ll be kind enough to unlock every door in his mansion. With the doors taken care of, head back outside and up to the second floor. If you haven’t already fixed the staircase, just take a detour to the right to find a coffee stand next to the building and hit the blue umbrella to create a magic circle. Activate it to pull of a piece of the wall you can use as a platform up to the second floor.
Inside you can finally make that one last jump and retrieve your well earned treasure: Treasure No. 13 Log Cabin. While you’re there, you can also remove a sticker to make a bridge for easy access if you ever wanted to go back, as well as contributing to completing the mansion.
Oh, and if the treasure was a bit of a let down, the Toad will also reward you with 10,000 coins as well. Not a bad haul for our efforts!
