Mario games are typically all about a wild nonstop adventure but even the plumber needs to take a break from rescuing his Princess once in a while. There are tons of ways to relax, but what better way is there to have a break than with some old fashioned fishing. After all, it works for Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and most farming sim titles. Here are all the instructions for fishing in Paper Mario: the Origami King.

Veteran Mario players will be familiar with Cheep Cheeps, the big bright red fish species of the land. Initially, you’ll need to do the fishing game as part of the story because during the level in Overlook Mountain, there’s a quest where you have to collect Shell Stones and one of them happens to be in the water. This begins after exiting Toad Town in the early stages of the game. Once you complete that, the fishing feature will be a purely recreational spot to collect some extra goodies later on. Should you wish, you can play it a little bit to see what your line pulls up or you can go back later when you’re collecting everything you missed post-game. Note there might be some things there relevant to all the collecting quests!

Fishing is very straightforward but players have suggested turning off motion controls to make it the easiest. Aline your pole right or left before tossing it into the deep blue via pressing and releasing the A button. Once a fish bites the bait you will notice an exclamation point appear above them and this is your chance to start to get them in. Be careful, as the Cheep Cheep may try to trick you at this stage so it’s best to wait for another exclamation point to pop up before going all hook line and sync. If you try to pull them and get the feeling they’ll flee you can use the B button to push it back until you see that next exclamation, where you should promptly press A. You’ll be an expert angler in no time!
