Keeping your HP up is a constant struggle in Paper Mario: The Origami King. Every battle is a test of preserving your precious life to avoid a costly setback in your quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom. While Mario only starts with a measly 50 HP, collecting MAX UP Hearts can boost that number significantly. You’ll find a couple as you progress through the story, but most of them are very well hidden and easily missed. If you want to max out Mario’s HP, this guide will show you how to do it.

MAX UP Hearts not only increase Mario’s HP by 5, 10, or 20, but also raise his attack power too. Because this RPG doesn’t see Mario gain XP and level up, this is the only way to boost your stats, so finding as many as possible will be a huge advantage. There is a character named Love Toad who appears in Toad Town after you’ve reached Shogun Studios that can give you hints as to where MAX UP Hearts are, and how many left you have to find, but he only will give you clues on areas you’ve already visited.

MAX UP Hearts: Red Streamer

There’s only one MAX UP Heart to find in this section of the game, and it is automatically obtained after escaping from the giant turtle shell. Just go along like normal and you’ll get this one automatically.

MAX UP Hearts: Blue Streamer

We’ve got five hearts to find during this section of the game.

Once you can set sail on the Great Sea, make your way over to the Princess Peach cruise ship. On the deck is a chest with the first +20 MAX UP Heart inside.

Second is in the Water Vallumental Shrine. Head down the stairs in the first room of the shrine and give the toad in the North area a little whack to gain the +5 MAX UP Heart.

When you get to the Tall Grass Plains on Autumn Mountain keep an eye out for a small path Southwest that leads to a cave. Inside is a Toad who will give you another +5 MAX HP.

The next  +20 MAX UP Heart will come as part of the main story after you give a baseball to the Chain Chomp in Shogun Studios.

The last +5 is also in Shogun Studios, and obtained by solving the House of Riddles.

MAX UP Hearts: Yellow Streamer

There’s only three in this portion, so lets snatch them all up!

First is a +10 MAX UP Heart in Shroom City. You’ll need to hop on a speaker to get over the Northwest wall. From here, go into the next room and break a crate to free a Scaredy Rat you’ll need to fight. After winning, use the magic circle, talk to the Snifit to rescue the Toad he’s using as a surfboard and claim the heart.

Traveling Southwest in the Scorching Sandpaper Desert, you’ll come across a very suspicious circle of stones. Dig in the center to collect a shriveled up MAX UP Heart that you can bring to the pond in Whispering Woods to restore into a +5 MAX UP Heart.

Our last stop here is the Temple of Shrooms. First you’ll have to recruit 10 or more faceless toads to be able to open coffins. When you find the room full of coffins, push open the one with the image of a heart on it to get the +10 MAX UP Heart inside.

MAX UP Hearts: Purple Streamer

We’ve got another set of three to collect in this section.

Your first stop will be on Heart Island. Find two hidden switches behind some bushes to reveal and origami heart, then find the third switch to make a ledge you can cross. Go on up and you’ll have another +20 MAX UP Heart.

On the waves of the Great Sea, sail over to the middle of the Starman on your sea chart and take a dive. You’ll pull out a Canned Heart that can be opened by the Dry Goomba in Autumn Mountain for a nice +5 MAX UP Heart.

Last up you’ll need to jump across some icicles on the Ice Vellumental Mountain. If you hop on the first icicle on the left of the entrance you’ll spot a hole in the wall with a chest tucked inside. Open it up and grab yourself a +5 MAX UP Heart.

MAX UP Hearts: Green Streamer

These final two hearts are all that stand between you and max HP!

Go into the main plaza of Shangri-Spa and whack the blue parasol to knock loose a Snifit. He’ll sell you a +10 MAX UP Heart for a hefty 10,000 coins.

And our last +10 MAX UP Heart is right at the beginning of Spring Rainbows. Find the platform that is blown upward by steam and break a wall just to the left of it. Inside are three structures you’ll need to demolish to boost the steam power so you can ride that platform all the way up to a chest. Inside is the last heart.

If you’ve followed our guide then you’ll now have a total of 200 HP, the maximum amount possible in the game.
