Paper Mario: The Origami King has finally arrived on Nintendo Switch. The latest installment in the 2-D/3-D RPG series boasts around 30 hours of gameplay just to complete the main storyline, but it’s so addictive that the time will just fly by. Even after players defeat the menacing King Olly, though, there’s still much to be done in Toad Town and beyond.

There are quite a few elements involved in completing the game at 100 percent. For the most part, this includes finding every collectible and rescuing every Toad, which can be done along the way if one wishes to do so. In some cases, it may be easier to finish the plot first and then focus on each element individually later.

15 Visit The Underground Tunnel

Early on in the game, during Mario and Olivia’s adventure through Toad Town, the two must travel through an underground tunnel, which had previously been locked up. You may have noticed a colorless graffiti artwork of Princess Peach and Mario during the first visit to the tunnel.

Return to this same tunnel after you beat the game. Not only will that initial art be filled with color, but the remainder of the tunnel system will be covered in drawings. Pay close attention from left to right, as the graffiti tells a famous story of Bowser kidnapping the princess.

14 Explore Shogun Studios

After a long battle with a power-hungry Origami King, there’s no better way to unwind than spending time at the ever-popular theme park Shogun Studios. Olivia loves it there. We recommend buying the Royalty Pass if you didn’t in the first visit, since it will give unlimited access to the park. Visit the Shuriken Dojo again to channel your inner ninja and beat your own shuriken-throwing high scores.

Aside from the Dojo, there’s also the House of Riddles, where you must spot the difference between two rooms.

13 Take Photos

Also in Shogun Studios is the Dress-Up Photo Studio, which is unlocked after you rescue the Toads in the area. The fee is 500 bits for those with a Commoner Pass, and free for those with a Royalty Pass. Mario, Bobby, and Olivia can dress up in different themed outfits and pose for different photos, including a Royalty-exclusive one.

If you return to the Photo Studio after you’ve finished the game, you will notice a mysterious but friendly presence in the snapshots.

12 Find Secret Islands Of The Great Sea

There’s a lot to discover in the Great Sea, but some of it is best saved for later. Return to this area after beating the game to focus on finding coins, treasures, and more secret islands. One of these islands is Hammer Island, which unlocks the coveted Legendary Hammer. Find the spot in 4A on the map.

Another optional secret island to check out is the Square Island, which doubles as a battle arena for Paper Mache bosses of various difficulties. Beat them all to win coins and collectibles.

11 Star In Shy Guys’ Game Show

Perhaps one of the more time-consuming mini games is Shy Guys Finish Last, the game show at Shangri-Spa. You only need 100 points initially to pass through to the Spring of Rainbows, so it may be of interest to come back later and try for more.

The game contains four challenges, each with three levels of difficulty. There’s also a sudden death round. You can try to go for a perfect game to win a special trophy.

10 Rescue Toads

When King Olly and his minions took control of the Mushroom Kingdom, they crumpled quite a few poor paper Toads who got in the way. The Toads take on various different paper-folding forms, such as birds or flowers. As you proceed through each area, you can rescue dozens of Toads by pulling them or hitting them with your hammer. You will typically receive coins in return.

Be sure to head to the Sensor Lab after getting rid of the first streamer to unlock the Toad Tracker. This tool can be turned on at any time, so long as it’s charged, to locate Toads.

9 Search For Collectibles

There are 120 collectible treasures scattered throughout Origami King. These figurines depict things like Peach’s castle, a Paper Mache Koopa Troopa, a brick block, and more. Treasures can only be found in wooden treasure chests.

Though some treasure chests are easily visible and accessible during your first run-through, others may require a bit of backtracking. For this reason, collecting each and every treasure may be a post-game task. Oftentimes the chests are hidden in plain sight, but just aren’t easy to reach.

8 Fill Holes With Confetti

Mario takes on an unusual but quite useful tool in Origami King — confetti. The colorful strips of paper can be found in trees, flowers, and rocks. Sometimes, Toads offer bags of confetti as gifts. An image of a tied sack rests in the corner of the screen and changes color when it is filled with confetti.

This confetti can be used to fill holes left by King Olly’s paper mache minions. In some cases, filling the holes is required to proceed. However, there are also various smaller holes that take only one confetti toss to fill and release a handful of coins. It’s a great way to collect some quick cash for items.

7 Hit Question Blocks

It just wouldn’t be a Mario game without those question blocks. The iconic yellow and white blocks can be found individually all over the kingdom. Some blocks simply line the path as you proceed in the game, while others take a bit of intuition and searching to reach.

Question blocks typically contain coins in various amounts. Some hold useful battle items and weapons, such as iron boots, as well as hearts, so it’s important to hit as many as possible.

6 Unlock Trophies

Trophies are a subcategory of collectible treasures, though these take a bit more effort to obtain. There are only 15 trophies in total. Many of these trophies are achieved by completing other elements of the game, like finding every collectible treasure, so finding every last one is best left as your final task.

It’s important to know that trophies will not be given to you on the spot. You should head over to the museum once you complete a task and the receptionist will reward you with the trophy. They will be displayed in one of the museum’s galleries.

5 Beat Your Own Boss Battle Records

Take on your favorite bosses once more at the Battle Lab, located in Toad Town near the museum. Among other training machines, the Battle Lab houses the Bossomatic Fighter, which sends you right back to any defeated boss of your choosing. The battle will be timed so you can beat your own records.

The strength you had at the time you first fought the boss will be restored. Additionally, these battles do not result in a Game Over when you run out of health.

4 Play Mini-Games In The Battle Lab

In addition to the Bossomatic Fighter, you can use the Battle Lab to better train your jumping, blocking, and hammering. There’s also an opportunity to practice those nerve-wracking ring puzzles, both in regular battles and boss battles.

There are two different mini-games in ring training; The Ringer and Speed Rings. For the former, your goal is to clear 10 lineups as quickly as possible. Alternatively, Speed Rings gives you 100 seconds to clear as many lineups as you can. Your progress in both games will be recorded.

3 Complete The Museum

Everything you earn or unlock in Origami King will appear in the museum in Toad Town. In addition to collectibles and trophies, you can find art and songs there. The only way to obtain new art is to buy the works with Toad Points, which are earned every time you rescue a Toad.

Songs, on the other hand, are found in two ways. Simply running through the main story of the game will unlock every song you encounter. However, to get additional songs, you must fill all the holes in any given area. The only way to complete the song gallery is to complete the game.

2 Max Your HP

Achieve maximum strength and health by collecting each and every Max Up Heart. Your HP can go up to 200 by the final boss, but only some of these Max Up Hearts are obtained in the main story. Some hearts increase your HP and strength by 5, while others give you a whopping 20 points. The extra strength helps you defeat some enemies, like the Goomba, without battling.

You can check how many hearts you’re missing by rescuing the Toad just outside of Shogun Studios. He will head back to Toad Town and wait by the red brick building. There, he can tell you how many you have left to find.

1 Start Over

Give yourself an encore by running through the entire story again. While you can overwrite your save file from the first run-through, we suggest starting a file on another Switch profile so you can compare your progress!
