If you’ve been enjoying the cheery, charming ride that is Nintendo Switch’s Paper Mario: The Origami King, you might want to stop for the moment. A couple of new bugs have come to light, one of which can prevent 100% completion and one of which can stop progress in the main quest entirely.
This new instalment in the Paper Mario series really is a great tonic for these troubled times. Its bold and colorful world is just so relentlessly cheerful and adorable that you can’t help but forget all of your troubles as you play (until you’re hit by one of its emotional moments or the faceless Toad weirdery of the Temple of Shrooms, that is). Still, 2020 wasn’t about to let us enjoy something fun, harmless and wholesome for long, and so frightening new bugs have been discovered in the game.
One major glitch arises in the Shangri-Spa. While journeying through this region of the game, the player will be tasked with having the locations of four different springs on the map stamped on their Stamp Card. Achieving this allows passage to the Spring of Rainbows. As tempting as that sounds, though, you’ll want to be very careful about finishing this little quest for now. As of right now, the Toad at the entrance takes your VIP card and there’s no (known) way of getting another, so if you leave at the wrong time, you won’t be able to enter again.
From there, affected players will have no way to progress and no way to alter their save, forcing them to begin a new one. As this clip from Nintendo Unity demonstrates, you’ll need to make sure you progress through the Spring of Rainbows without leaving to avoid potential disaster:
As Nintendo Life reports, a second glitch has also been discovered. This one revolves around a certain Toad, found in the Snif/Shroom City area, “where, if you turn off the water in the hotel and leave without freeing the Toad which is being used as a surfboard, it’s impossible to liberate that Toad later on in the game. While this isn’t as dramatic an issue as you can still finish the game, you won’t get that all-important 100% rating.”
While these two issues have easy enough workarounds (don’t leave the Spring of Rainbows prematurely for the first and rescue that surfboard Toad immediately for the second), these issues are already causing strife and Nintendo will want to make sure they patch them as soon as possible. Until they do, take care, fans of The Origami King!
