Our quick take

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 - 4.5 / 5

Big zoom, small body

Speedy autofocus

Tech explosion

New sensor: new pixel count

To recap

We’ve got small moans about the TZ40’s resolution increase and some repetitive Wi-Fi password entry, but put all that to one side and the TZ40 is otherwise an incredible compact camera. The 20x optical zoom covers a significant range, while the optical image stabilisation system is impressive and the images we’ve managed to snap - despite subtle quibbles - make this among the best small-sensor compacts we’ve tested. There’s some room for improvement, sure, but we like what we’ve seen a whole lot.
