Disney has been killing it with live-action remakes of their beloved animated movie catalog. While the upcoming Mulan might look like yet another relatively straight adaptation of a previous animated film, it’s not quite the same. Mulan, in 1998 and now, is based on an ancient Chinese legend. Not a fairy tale. Her story was commonly known across Asia long before Disney’s animated feature, and it’s that story (as much as the animated feature) that makes up the inspiration for the new film....

The anime community has lost the talented director, animator, and illustrator Osamu Kobayashi, most notably known for his work on Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad and Naruto: Shippuden. Tributes poured into Twitter from fans of the 57-year-old, after a posthumous tweet was posted as a touching farewell. Kobayashi lent his skills to many anime projects between 2002 and 2019, including three episodes of the popular Naruto: Shippuden in 2016. The director’s passing was announced on his Twitter page, acknowledging his two-year battle with kidney cancer....

NBA 2K21 revealed a trailer showing off gameplay on next-gen consoles. All footage is captured on the PlayStation 5 and shows off the drastic leap in graphics and animation. The trailer highlights both cover athletes, Damian Lillard and Zion Williamson, who look more life-like than ever before. With the free-to-play Ghost Recon Online planned for PC in the same year Ghost Recon: Future Soldier would release for consoles, combined with Ubisoft’s strict DRM policies, it was easy to believe news that Future Soldier wouldn’t come to PC gamers. Instead, to bypass piracy entirely, Ubisoft would Ghost Recon Online for them instead. Fortunately for PC gamers, that’s not the case and PC versions of both games are coming....
At E3 2011, Saints Row: The Third stole the show (for me at least) with a speculator hands-off demo. It was another big week for Gearbox Software as the studio released another creative trailer for its upcoming shooter, Borderlands 3. Promoting a sense of Co-Op and freidnship, the wild trailer shows the four main vault hunters dancing while killing the bandits of Pandora with flowers sprouting underneath them. The Celebration of Togetherness event also revealed the fate of cross-play for the game while continuing to promote the title in what is quickly becoming a very crowed fall release season....
In anticipation of the Disney+ documentary series Marvel 616, planned to release sometime this fall, Marvel has released two new clips to showcase some of what will be covered by the series. The clips showcase a couple of minutes of content from episode two and four of the upcoming series, titled, “Higher, Further, Faster” and “Lost and Found” respectively. The episode “Higher, Further, Faster” (a phrase closely associated with Captain Marvel) is directed by Gillian Jacobs, and is centered on the pioneering women in Marvel Comics....

BioWare has finally officially opened up about the future of the Mass Effect series, even going as far as giving a brief look at what players can expect to see in the next space-faring title. However, while the teaser shown at The Game Awards intentionally doesn’t give much away, it would seem that some of the more subtle decisions may have had more meaning than initially assumed. Some observant fans were the first to point out a detail involving two galaxies appearing in the opening shot of the Mass Effect teaser trailer, hoping that it might implicate a connection with a previously disconnected game in the series....
It’s no secret that I’ve been a bit sick of the Pokemon games coming out year after year (though hats off to New Pokemon Snap, which was a refreshing change). Despite my initial love for Pokemon, it’s been incredibly difficult to stay invested when each game is the exact same story with almost the exact same game mechanics. But if I’m honest, game mechanics aside, one of the most significant reasons that I can’t get into Pokemon games is because I can’t relate at all to the main characters....

With Nier Replicant only recently coming out, we’re in a bit of an odd spot. Because the original release of Nier was a bit of a cult classic, it didn’t pull in anywhere close to the amount of people Automata did. Because of that, there are a lot of people who are now experiencing Nier Replicant and noticing a lot of stuff that feels like it was pulled from Automata. But, it’s actually the other way around....

Numbers are growing for Nintendo’s Switch Online as there are now over 26 million members of the subscription service. According to Nintendo Soup, the Big N revealed the news in its Corporate Management Policy Briefing (sounds as dull as 1,2 Switch). According to the report, there were spikes in subscriptions from releases of games that feature online play. We agree with Nintendo Soup that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon Sword & Shield, and most recently the incredibly successful Animal Crossing: New Horizons are likely behind the service’s success....
