Even as Overwatch approaches its second birthday later in the spring, Blizzard isn’t resting on its success. The new year has already brought with it Competitive Season 8, which shakes things up by reducing the maximum skill rating difference between players. Not only that, the game also gave active players 5 free loot boxes during the recent Winter Wonderland event. There’s more change on the way, however, as Blizzard has recently added a small update that applies some serious nerfs to a couple of popular characters....

Overwatch came out last May and has lit the gaming world up in a way that probably Blizzard (the publisher) didn’t even expect. It was the first time the company made a first-person shooter, and they nearly perfected it on their first attempt. A big reason why the game has taken off so fast is because of the characters, though. They all have different personalities that just work and they all have interesting backstories....

On March 9, former professional Overwatch player Jay “Sinatraa” Won was accused of sexual assault by his ex-girlfriend. After an outcry from the community, Overwatch will now be offering refunds to any players who purchased the Alien Zarya skin designed by Won. Two days ago, Won’s former girlfriend Cleo “cle0h” Hernandez published a nine-page Google Doc outlining her nine-month relationship with the then-Overwatch MVP. In the document, Hernandez alleges that Won sexually assaulted her on many occasions after she refused his advances....

Famous for beating a Dark Souls 3 boss with a dance pad, streamer Rudeism uses a bunch of bananas to play Overwatch, controlling banana-loving gorilla genius Winston. This week, the Overwatch Halloween Terror event has given players plenty of new, spooky content to enjoy. Various new cosmetic options have been made available in loot boxes, including skins and sprays, and the Junkenstein’s Revenge Brawl has also been giving players a run for their money....

Overwatch has impressed players with its team-based first-person shooting mechanics, characters, and frequent updates. It has been five years since the game was released to critical acclaim and the team behind the game is still working on the title. Rocksteady Studios has been doing a phenomenal job in building hype for the upcoming Batman: Arkham City, and gamers and Batfans alike are eagerly and equally building anticipation for the title. Of course, there are a few story arcs that have been hinted at that seem more appealing than others for the Arkham Asylum sequel, and the relationship between Doctor Hugo Strange and the Joker is one of them. As luck would have it, some new spoilers between the nature of the Strange-Joker relationship have been brought to light, courtesy of another viral Batman: Arkham City audio tape....

EA temporarily removed microtransactions from Star Wars Battlefront 2 as fans voiced their frustrations at the game’s business model. But the Star Wars shooter is not the only EA game to undergo a major overhaul in that department, as the developer behind Need for Speed Payback has now announced big changes, too. In a post on Reddit, Need for Speed Payback developer Ghost Games says that it has been looking at in-game data and feedback from players in order to alter the game’s progression system....

Netflix has broken its traditional silence about its viewership numbers to release a list of the top 10 most-watched original films on its streaming service. This list, released in mid-July 2020, features the Chris Hemsworth action movie Extraction at #1, followed by 2018’s Bird Box and 2020’s Spenser Confidential. Until recently, Netflix shared almost nothing about its viewer numbers with the public. What little information the streaming service shares is usually revealed as part of the company’s quarterly financial results, so it’s safe to assume these numbers have been massaged a bit....

A new update is now live in Call of Duty: Warzone, and it attempts to make some big gameplay fixes. There are a bevy of issues that the Call of Duty: Warzone community has to deal with, whether that be glitches, cheaters, or other problems. Thankfully the newest patch that Raven Software and the rest of the team behind the battle royale has released should help alleviate some of this....

Dungeons & Dragons players are going to have their hands full in a few weeks, as they customize characters with the 22 subclasses in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. But that doesn’t mean that the D&D team is slowing down. In fact, they just put out a new Unearthed Arcana that adds two more subclasses. Meet the Way of the Ascendant Dragon monk and Drakewarden ranger. We’ve covered Unearthed Arcana here at TheGamer before, but the gist is that D&D Wizards of the Coast lets fans playtest new ideas....

NieR: Automata is a Square Enix game that feels nothing like the Final Fantasy series. Set in the distant future, Nier: Automata saw success for its stunning art style, unique combat mechanics, and beautifully bittersweet narrative. Although it is technically a sequel to Nier RepliCant, it was the first in the franchise to truly break into western mainstream gaming circles. The game’s iconic lead character, 2B, is as enigmatic as she is reticent....

The original Nier was never a visually spectacular game, even for the console generation it occupied it paled in comparison to others in the genre. Textures were often muddy, while performance across both platforms failed to live up to expectations. It was a rocky experience, but the art and character designs shone through, proving so iconic in their uniqueness that even today, we look back upon them fondly. While Nier Replicant smooths out framerate troubles and other such annoyances, it rigidly abides by the visual identity that the 2010 classic helped introduce....

Fortnite has undoubtedly taken the gaming world by storm since launching its Battle Royale mode back in September 2017. Since then, the game has changed a lot and the community around it has grown tremendously – especially the streaming community. When most people think of streamers these days, Ninja is one of the first names to come to mind, and according to TEO Analytics, Ninja was the most viewed Twitch streamer in all of 2018 – and by an incredibly large margin....

The next online tournament event for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been announced and it includes characters from the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo Wii, as it brings together characters who appeared in games that were created in the ’00s. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate regularly hosts online tournaments that restrict the use of certain characters and stages. Recent events have included characters who fight with electric attacks (like Lucas and Pikachu), and fighters from The Legend of Zelda series, like the different Links and Princess Zelda....

A new report which includes input from industry insiders has delved deeper into why exactly Nintendo has turned to limited-time releases. If you’re reading this and thinking about when you’re going to pick up a copy of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, that ship has sailed. Nintendo has stuck to its word and the limited window in which you were able to buy the game has now closed. Not only is Mario 3D All-Stars no longer available on the Nintendo eShop, but you also won’t be able to find it in stores....

This is probably the best cast role yet for the upcoming Borderlands movie. Benjamin Byron Davis has just confirmed via his Instagram account that he’s been cast as Marcus Kincaid, the infamous Pandoran arms dealer that has been featured in every Borderlands game since the very beginning. Davis has an extremely long IMDB page that’s full of roles that say “large man” in lots of different ways. Although he’s a bit typecast in TV and movies, video games have given him a means of branching out....

Although the game initially launched back in 2017, Observer: System Redux looks to be a very comprehensive next-generation experience, with the remaster bringing gorgeous visuals and new content to the original release’s campaign. However, while fans have seen a lot of the game’s striking visual enhancements, there still hasn’t been much coverage on what new story missions have been added to the experience. Bloober Team has sought to change that with a new gameplay video released exclusively by IGN, with the studio showcasing exactly what new story missions will be added to the game....

Oculus CEO, Palmer Luckey, believes that the PlayStation VR headset is a good device but not as high end as the Oculus Rift and is targeting a different audience. It’s been a busy week for the folks at Oculus as their first VR headset, the Rift, sold out during their initial pre-order run which came in at a $600 price point. While that price point may have been a lot higher than many fans expected, attention turned to Sony who is expected to launch its PlayStation VR headset with a lower price....

Old School RuneScape’s latest community poll about adding a new quest – A Kingdom Divided – to the game passed with flying colors. Nearly 93% of the votes cast were in favor of the addition, and Jagex hopes to bring the new content sometime in 2021. The Old School RuneScape team always runs community polls before adding, changing, or removing large chunks of content from the game. It’s goal is to keep all the players engaged with the world and provide a layer of transparency not normally seen with other developers....
