Fans of Capcom’s beloved action RPG franchise are counting down the days to Monster Hunter Rise’s March 26 release. This Nintendo Switch sensation in the making is going to pose a few issues even for series veterans, though. Experienced players probably thought they knew exactly what they were getting into when Rise was announced. It’s a Monster Hunter game, which means hundreds of hours of grinding, crafting, practicing with weapons and hilarious meal-eating animations....

Director Roland Emmerich is known for his disaster movies. However, his upcoming project Moonfall has picked up an odd first cast member in Josh Gad, known more for playing comedic roles and animated characters like Frozen’s Olaf than leading an action-packed disaster thriller. Gad’s casting was announced by The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday, which describes Emmerich’s film with Lionsgate as the story of a “ragtag team” sent on an “impossible mission” to save humanity as the moon falls out of orbit....

A fighting game kind of needs to have a storyline for the sake of identity. Not just for the characters, but for the world itself. Who are these characters and why are they fighting? Why are they fighting again? And again? Usually, these lead to fun B-movie plots that can carry a game or two. Sometimes the sequels just retread the same plot over and over (ie. the Soul Calibur games and King of Fighters), but Mortal Kombat has been able to hold its own for over 25 years due to embracing its own wacky mythology and finding ways to be fresh....

Cosmic Defenders - from indie game developer Fiery Squirrel - is officially available on Nintendo Switch as the first title under the Natsume Indie Program. To celebrate the launch, a brand-new trailer was released showcasing the game’s fast-paced 2D action. Cosmic Defenders is touted as a “2D fast-paced revolving shooter” in which players take on the role of unconventional heroes tasked with saving the universe from evil aliens. Players can compete by themselves or group up with up to four other players in the game’s Story Mode, with players protecting the sacred Tree of Life from the alien threat; Survival Mode, which tasks players with lasting as long as they can in each level while collecting coins to buy ability-buffing outfits; and Versus Mode, allowing players to compete against each other....

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is making the jump to live-action media once more, as Netflix is making a show based on the video game franchise. There was a time when video game to screen adaptations were panned upon arrival, but Netflix has thrown that thinking out of the window. Netflix has developed acclaimed animated video game shows, like Castlevania and Dragon’s Dogma. Netflix is also making an animated Resident Evil series, as well as a live-action one, following the children of Albert Wesker from the games....

A NeoGAF user uncovers a tweet from NerdLeaks stating that Sony is working on an ‘Untitled Spiderman PS4 Project’, and a trailer will probably be shown during E3 2016. Around 67 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period, a species of freshwater shark now known as Galagadon nordquistae swam in the rivers of what is now South Dakota. Its existence was recently discovered by scientists who were examining the two-ton sediment pile left over from the famous Sue the Tyrannosaurus rex find that took place back in 1990. By examining the sediment, scientists discovered around 24 teeth said to belong to the shark....

Square Enix and Platinum Games release a new trailer for NieR: Automata that has a bit of a Westworld vibe, with the game’s androids expressing human-like emotions. In NieR: Automata, players take on the role of a combat android fighting on behalf of the last remnants of humanity in a proxy war against a machine army of invaders from another world. The androids are programmed to do what their human masters have ordered, and yet, after viewing the latest trailer for the game that Square Enix and developer Platinum Games revealed last week, we can’t help but feel like we’re watching a bizarre anime version of Westworld....

Nintendo is finally announcing something! Nintendo announced today that there is a live Nintendo Treehouse stream tomorrow. It will feature gameplay from the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King, and it will show a new WayForward game. The event takes place tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT. WayForward, the developers behind Shantae, will show off a game in a franchise new to them. According to Nintendo’s Twitter, the game is based on a third-party franchise....

While Ys IX: Monstrum Nox won’t be releasing until February 2021 on PS4 (and sometime later on PC and Switch), publisher NIS America is squaring away what the box art will look like for its eventual physical edition. There is already a basic package design that showcases most of the characters, but a new poll is letting fans decide which alternative box art will be included as a reversible cover....

All of the next-gen showstoppers have left me feeling underwhelmed. Miles Morales isn’t inspiring much confidence so far, Demon’s Souls lacks the grimy charm of the original, Assassin’s Creed feels decidedly last-gen, and Sackboy… actually, scratch that, Sackboy’s wonderful. Moving on. While the graphical upgrades, faster load times, and intuitive UIs have been nice, I’ve been hard-pressed to really sell someone on getting a PS5 or an Xbox Series X. Sure, they’re major hardware improvements, but the marquee games that you’re playing on them mostly feel like the same homogenized triple A stuff you can get elsewhere....

It feels like not that long ago the OnLive service was on the brink of something truly revolutionary, bringing cloud-based gaming to the masses. Major console developers were sweeping up services like Gaikai, and OnLive was slowly being factored into the launches of some highly anticipated retail releases. Now, though, it appears the company has fallen from grace, and may in fact by on its last gasp. Just yesterday it was reported that OnLive fired at least half of its staff without the hope of a severance package....

It seems oddly appropriate that since Oblivion ushered in an era of DLC with its horse armor, its successor Skyrim might usher in a new era of paid modifications. Valve stirred up plenty of controversy last night when they announced mod creators could now sell content for profit in the Steam Workshop, prompting plenty of previously free modifications to suddenly have price ranges from $1-$10 (and, in some cases, even more)....
