The Italian voice actor who portrayed Soldier 76 in the Italian dub of Overwatch has passed away.
“Old soldiers never die, and they don’t fade away,” writes Blizzard in a somber announcement on Twitter. “We honor the memory of Roberto Draghetti who brought us the voice of Soldier: 76 in Italy. His extraordinary talent and unmistakable voice delivered depth and passion to one of Overwatch’s most iconic heroes.”
According to Italian media, Draghetti died of a massive heart attack at his home in Rome on July 24. He was just one month shy of his 60th birthday.
Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Draghetti is the brother of Italian actress Francesca Draghetti. Following in her footsteps, Roberto went on to become a prolific voice actor, often taking on roles in video games, movies, and TV shows from some of the biggest names in the business.
His voice acting credits include roles in big Hollywood animated films, such as Kai in Kung Fu Panda 3, Dim in A Bug’s Life, and Maurice in the Madagascar franchise. On television, Draghetti played Fat Tony and Superintendent Chalmers in the Italian dub of The Simpsons as well as Eddy in Nickelodeon’s Ed, Edd, n Eddy. For live-action films, Draghetti was the Italian voice for many of Hollywood’s biggest actors, including Noah Emmerich, Idris Elba, Terry Crews, and Josh Brolin.
Anime was another big part of Draghetti’s career, voicing absentee and abusive father Gendo Ikari in the Netflix dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and as the voice of villain Douglas Bullet in the One Piece animated film.
And of course, Draghetti played a whole host of video game characters. Italian gamers will recognize Draghetti as the voice of Fairburne in the Sniper Elite series, the voice of Garrosh in both World of Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm, and as Jack Vincent in Call of Duty: Black Ops III. He also had roles in Fallout 3, Unreal Tournament 3, and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
