This week, Overwatch players finally get to take Echo out for a spin in Competitive Play now that she’s back in the rotation. Taking her place are four new characters, many of which work well with and against Echo’s specific playstyle. With the absence of these heroes, players will have to wait another time to properly put her to the test in Competitive.
The latest hero pool ban is underway in Overwatch, removing McCree, Widowmaker, Mercy, and Wrecking Ball from the roster temporarily. Widowmaker and McCree are no strangers to the ban, having been removed many times since hero bans were implemented. What makes their omission more impactful this time is that both McCree and Widowmaker are two of Echo’s biggest counters, while Mercy is always an ideal support for flying allies.
Echo is the latest hero to join Overwatch and was banned just days after her release, which had players scratching their heads as to why she would so quickly be barred from Competitive Play without proper live testing – especially since she is such a popular character. Echo first premiered in the “Reunion” Animated Short that featured McCree and Ash, and again in the announcement trailer for Overwatch 2, so players have long-awaited her arrival to the game.
She was added to the game’s PTR shortly after she was officially announced last month, then was finally added to the game mid-April only to be immediately banned from Competitive. Echo has the type of moves and mobility to really shake the game up, so maybe Blizzard wanted to give players some breathing room to get used to these changes. Whatever the company’s reasoning for the delay, Echo is now available and ready for action.
