Overwatch players have already had plenty to shout out about lately after new character Moira was released and the Blizzard World theme park map was unveiled. But Blizzard has far more up its sleeves, with the developer confirming that there will be plenty of new content released next year.

One Overwatch player took to the game’s official forum to ask when new content will be added to the game. Said player may not be representative of most Overwatch fans, but his concerns were no less valid after hitting level 490 and unlocking “pretty much everything.” The post received a response from Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan, who told the fan to expect “a ton of new content” in 2018.

There will be “some really awesome items for upcoming events,” added Kaplan. The developer previously stated that Blizzard would not be adding any new events for year two of the game, which ends in May 2018. So it stands to reason that one of these upcoming events will be a holiday event next month that offers fresh Christmas and Lunar New Year-themed loot.

Kaplan also told the fan that Blizzard will be adding “a lot of new items to the base loot box” in early 2018. This builds on what Blizzard said during its BlizzCon 2017 event earlier this month. The company unveiled some Blizzard crossover skins for the game, also confirming that every character in the game would receive crossover cosmetics including skins, sprays, and more.

Much of this content will be available in the game’s base loot boxes, as opposed to event-based loot boxes. Although event-based loot boxes do provide players with an added reason to spend time with the game around the holidays and during specific seasons, not everyone enjoys them.

Overwatch players have argued that it forces them to grind and takes the fun out of the event and thus spoils the game overall. Many have called for Blizzard to add more content to base loot boxes or to make event-specific items available in base loot boxes instead. Blizzard’s new base loot box strategy seems to be a direct response to fan demands.

All in all, it means that Overwatch players have a lot to look forward to in the coming months. While the popular multiplayer shooter isn’t perfect and issues in other areas of the game remain (e.g with toxicity in the community), fans will appreciate that Blizzard is addressing one key area at least. And of course, many players will be excited to unlock the new content.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
