One should never look a gift horse in the mouth, but the lineup of freebies for Xbox Live Gold subscribers in May is kind of bad. Microsoft gave us the full selection of free titles coming to its “Games with Gold” program next month and Overlord 2 is about the only thing here worth considering.

Overlord 2 isn’t as solid as its predecessor, but the quirky strategy title has a cult-following for a very good reason. Its wacky sense of humor and excellent controls (for a console RTS) make it an easy recommendation. Maybe it won’t turn you into a diehard fan, but that is one series worth digging into.

Everything else? I’m not sure what the process was for games this month. Sensible World of Soccer has an incredibly weird history behind it from its 2007 release and Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor -Martyr was received pretty averagely. V-Rally 4, as well, isn’t even worth writing home about. This seems more like a filler month than anything subscribers should be cheering about.

Microsoft can’t always hit a home run with these titles, but I have to wonder if dropping Games with Gold in favor of Game Pass isn’t a better idea. Maybe a subscription to Live Gold can get users limited use of Game Pass so that it pushes them to make the jump? The selection of titles on there is far better, even if you don’t get to keep them forever.

Microsoft could also reduce the price of Live Gold and cut free games entirely. While Sony still offers some PS4 freebies with PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now is nowhere near as successful as Game Pass has been. Making Live Gold cheaper could get more people on board and force Sony to better compete, which is a win for everyone.

Whatever happens, Microsoft really needs to up its game for Games with Gold. There’s practically no reason to subscribe to the service anymore unless online gaming is that big of a deal for you. At any rate, here is when you’ll be able to grab this month’s free games.
