A developer who worked on Croc: Legend of the Gobbos has revealed he is very keen to remake the PS1 cult classic for present-day gamers.

Whether its TV shows, movies, or video games, nostalgia is the order of the day. There’s big bucks to be made from remaking, remastering, and revisiting popular elements from the past. It makes sense as not only is there a whole new audience to expose the content to, but it will also appeal to people who enjoyed that content the first time around.

In the gaming world, look no further than Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Final Fantasy VII, and a long list of other games that have either been tweaked or completely remade and released in recent years. Popular platformers like the first two mentioned have been the most fruitful for developers, and chances that well will be revisited constantly in the coming years.

It might not have been as popular as Crash and Spyro, but PS1 cult classic Croc: Legend of the Gobbos holds a special place in many gamers’ hearts. It sold three million copies when first released in 1997. That’s 1.8 million fewer than Spyro, and 3.8 million fewer than Crash, but still a respectable total. Plus, it turns out we’re not the only ones to have dreamed about a potential remake.

The CEO of Argonaut Software, which developed Croc, Jez San admitted on Twitter that he is keen to remake Legend of the Gobbos for modern-day gamers. “One day I’d like to remake it. I get inbound all the time from folks that want to do it,” San admitted. What is particularly promising about the tweet is that it was a reply to something posted in 2019, which suggests San has been trawling social media gauging interest in a Croc remake.

The bad news is Argonaut Software no longer exists. San has continued to work in the mobile software arena, but not so much on the gaming side of things. If Croc is going to get the remaster treatment, San and the game’s fanbase might have to rely on another developer to do the legwork. Activision has been responsible for Crash and Spyro’s revival, perhaps it can take Croc under its remake wing too.
