Outriders is not something that can exactly be classified as a difficult game, but every once in a while, the game does pit you against enemies that are tougher than everything else, which requires you to be the best player you can be. A particular encounter during the Salvation main quest is an example of this scenario.
During this quest, you will be pitted against an enemy that’s going to be tougher to put down than others. This enemy is Captain Serrano. Captain Serrano is a captain for the Insurgents. The rank of Captain is usually given to those who are Altered, but their powers are not as potent as some of the Altered bosses you encounter in the game. Regardless, these enemies can still be tough, and Captain Serrano is among the toughest of the bunch. However, if you know exactly what to do during the situation, you can overcome this challenge fairly easily.
6 What Heralds His Arrival
Before you can properly fight and take down Captain Serrano, you have to be familiar with when exactly he spawns. Before Captain Serrano jumps down the arena to face you, you’ll first have to deal with a bunch of henchmen. You’re most likely already familiar with this situation at this point.
The most likely scenario that’s going to happen here is that the remaining enemies that will be on the field before Captain Serrano arrives are going to be Riflemen. Now, always keep this in mind. As soon as you take down that last enemy, the captain will jump down the arena. Know where he will land and make sure you’re not too far or too close to him when you kill the last enemy.
5 Take Advantage Of The Arena
The level design of almost every area in Outriders is designed specifically for gunplay combat. Although the game almost encourages you to minimize using covers during fights, you’re going to want to use it more often when being pitted against Captain Serrano. There are a ton of covers that you can scurry behind in this arena, make sure you know when to use them.
You can go further back where you came from and use the covers to deal with Captain Serrano and his henchmen. If you have a sniper rifle equipped, now would be a good time to use them. If you really dislike using covers during combat, you can simply use these whenever you’re reloading or reassessing your situation. Whatever the case, know the arena you’re on and know how to take advantage of it.
4 Fight According To Your Class
There are four different classes in Outriders, and any one of them isn’t exactly better than the others. It will always depend on your play style and how you use them. Now, Captain Serrano is one of those encounters where your utilization of your class will really matter. This is the perfect time for you to fully make use of your abilities and what your class is suited for.
For example, if you are using the Devastator class, don’t be afraid of getting up close and using your abilities. If you’re a Trickster, teleport behind him and use Temporal Blade or Cyclone Slice. If you’re a Technomancer, be sure you’re using the Blighted Rounds ability for higher damage and more life leech. You get the gist. While you can definitely beat Captain Serrano with just your guns alone, using your abilities will make the whole ordeal much smoother.
3 Take Out The Other Enemies First
During this encounter, you won’t only be dealing with Captain Serrano alone. You’ll also have to worry about his henchmen. A group of Cutthroats, Breachers, and Riflemen will come with him as backup. You can easily use this to your advantage as it will allow you to have more enemies to leech health from. However, you must always get rid of them first before you focus on Captain Serrano, not the other way around.
Deal with the Cutthroats and Breachers first. Once you’ve gotten rid of them, head up to the Riflemen and take care of them next. Once they’re all taken care of, you can fight Captain Serrano by his lonesome. This will make the fight much simpler for you. In fact, this is a tip you should keep in mind when fighting other bosses. Always deal with henchmen first.
2 Use Weapons With High Critical Chance And Damage
If you can manage it, make sure you’re using a weapon that has a high critical chance and high critical damage. Of course, this isn’t an absolute necessity for this mini-boss fight, but doing so will help you in the overall fight.
You’ve most likely already gotten a handful of powerful weapons at this point in the game, especially if you’re playing at the highest World Tier or if you’ve been farming for them during the demo or the early game. Find a weapon that has a critical chance bonus and this fight should be easier to get through.
1 Is It Bugged?
A lot of players have had a difficult time dealing with Captain Serrano for one very specific reason—the encounter was bugged. For whatever reason, his health just won’t drop no matter how many bullets he takes. This isn’t because of an ability unique to him, nor does it eventually fade away with enough bullets, this is a bug that’s still present on the current patch.
If this happens to you, just quit to the lobby and return to the game. This should easily remedy this issue. Although, you’re going to have to face the enemies prior to this encounter.
