If Othercide were not a rogue-lite, it might very well be impossible to overcome. The challenges this game throws at you can often seem insurmountable, but thankfully the game does offer the player a few advantages to attempt to even the playing field — one of those being Remembrances. These perks will give you specific bonuses or buffs on future attempts through the game to hopefully push you a little closer to victory. If you’re stuck on which ones are best, or how to properly take advantage of them, this guide will tell you everything you need to know.
Shards
Before we talk about Remembrances properly, we need to make sure you can even use them. Shards are what you spend on actually activating remembrances when you start a new run, or recollection, as the game calls it. You gain shards as one of the rewards for completing missions, and can see exactly how many you will earn for each mission under the “Rewards” column. Shards do not benefit your current recollection in any way, and can only be use when starting a new one so it can sometimes be worth it to start a recollection, build up some shards, and then restart to use them to activate your Remembrances.
Unlocking Remembrances
There are dozens of total Remembrances in Othercide, so listing them all would just be overwhelming. But, each individual one has a unique requirement to unlock. Some have identical perks as others, but can often stack if you decide to use multiple of the same type. Most unlock requirements are fairly straightforward, such as discovering and defeating bosses, completing each chapter’s memory tabs, and defeating specific numbers of different enemy types.
For the most part, simply plaything through the game naturally will eventually lead you to unlocking the majority of the Remembrances, so don’t worry too much about playing differently to unlock them right away.
Remembrances Tips
First, discovering the boss of each era grants you a Remembrance that gives you a resurrection token to revive any of your fallen daughters. Since all you have to do is see the boss of each era, these are good ones to stack up so you can bring back as many daughters as possible. But, each one costs more and more shards to activate (30, 50, 80, 110, and 140), so you probably won’t be able to stack up too many tokens on any run. Other Remembrances you can get from bosses allow you to skip entire eras, and these can also be stacked. If you activate them all, you can even skip right to the final era if you really wanted.
If you want a quick edge right off the bat on a run, the Beaked Mask, Heavy Key, Twisted Mask, and Flower of Paradise boosts newborn daughters to level 4, 7, 10, and 15 (the level cap) respectively. These all require killing bosses to obtain, with the Flower of Paradise only dropping after killing the Suffering boss itself, so you won’t be able to completely overpower the early game until you’ve won a run first.
Some of the most useful Remembrances boost all of your daughters max HP, and can be grinded out fairly easily. These are the Shimmering Blood, Red Embers, and Spark of Life Remembrances, which boost max HP by 15, 30, and 55%, making them some of the most universally beneficial perks in the game. They all are rewards for dealing a total number of damage across all your runs, starting at 10,000, then going up to 100,000 and 300,000. If you’re desperate for that HP boost, just throw yourself into a couple missions dealing as much damage as you can and then starting over.
Finally, completing each chapter’s memories tab will give bonus AP to all your daughters. It starts small at just +10, but even that can make all the difference in completing a mission or keeping a daughter alive. Unfortunately memories are random drops, so it could take a lot of runs to finally get them all.
Early Suggestions
A lot about Othercide is still to be discovered, but there are a few universal tips that can make getting over the game’s initial difficulty hump easier. First would be to get at least the Shimmering Blood Remembrance for that initial HP boost. Hopefully you get good luck with memories, because pairing more HP with additional AP is about the best combination of Remembrances for the early game, with a third being increased XP gain that you can get off of certain bosses. If you have the shards for any more, resurrection tokens are always great to have on hand as well.
The other Remembrances are more situational, such as dealing more damage to specific enemy types, and not worth investing shards in early on. You should also avoid skipping eras to keep practicing the easier stages and missions, since skipping them will only start you on harder missions with weaker daughters.
