OG Esports has decided to part ways with OG Seed, the European esports organization announced today. OG Seed was picked up by the organization as a secondary Dota 2 project, similar to Academy teams in League of Legends. The five-man roster will officially be released on July 1st, 2020.
OG’s main Dota 2 squad made history in 2019, becoming the first-ever team to win two, back-to-back titles at The International. Shortly after their historic victory, the organization signed OG Seed. The project brought five up-and-coming Dota talents together in a secondary team, similar to those seen in League of Legends Academy leagues. The team, made up of Omar “Madara” Dabachach, Rasmus “Chessie” Blomdin, Andreas “Xibbe” Ragnemalm, Zakari “Zfreek” Freedman, and Petu “Peksu” Vaatainen officially joined OG in November of 2019.
In their debut under the prestigious OG banner, OG Seed placed 3-4th in the DreamLeague Season 13 European open qualifier. Going into 2020, the team placed second at Maincast Winter Brawl and later qualified for the ESL One Los Angeles European closed qualifier. Continuing through the year, OG Seed placed second at both DOTA Summit 12 and Cyber.bet Cup: Spring Series EU.
Many esports events faced postponements and cancellations as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. The ESL One Los Angeles Dota 2 Major was moved online, while the final two Majors of the 2019-20 Dota Pro Circuit were outright cancelled. The International 10, which was slated to take place in August, has been postponed, potentially until 2021.
As more events were moved online and separated by region, the conflict of interest regarding OG’s multiple team ownership was brought into question. The organization cites this as a reason for letting OG Seed go, stating that they were unable to find a solution despite working with tournament organizers. OG explains that they “realized that it was still probably a little too soon to try to properly implement multi-team ownership.”
As OG and OG Seed will not be able to compete in the same regional events under the same organization, the latter is now on track to be released at the end of the month. There is currently no word on where the roster plans to go next, though OG states that they plan to use the next month to “help find [OG Seed] a great new home.”
OG Seed is currently still playing in the OMG Summer Cup. OG’s main squad will next compete in BLAST Bounty Hunt, beginning on Tuesday, June 9th.
