There are many opportunities for modders in the world of gaming, be it new consoles to tweak or in-game assets to borrow from another franchise - they’ll find a way. None are more satisfying than watching the 1993 FPS Doom run on multiple, random, and sometimes bizarre electronics. The latest device in the crosshairs to continue the trend is Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch.
It’s quite incredible the challenges that modders conquer to be able to play the pioneer shooter from id Software on whatever comes to mind. Up until now, we’ve had Doom Eternal fully-functional on a refrigerator (because gaming should always take place close to sustenance) and one of the weirdest mods was its title popping up on a pregnancy test. Doom modders know no bounds, and anything with a power source running through it is a potential candidate at this rate.
The next tech whizz to carry the beacon is self-professed “hacker” stacksmashing. The Swedish modder, in a combined effort with fellow Swedish coder Konrad Beckmann, managed to produce a diluted version of Doom which is visibly capable of running on the Game & Watch. In his YouTube video, he stated that the response from his followers to get Doom running on the handheld was overwhelming. He also admitted that the challenges ahead to achieve this were greater than he initially thought, but nevertheless, he persevered. Some of these obstacles included dumping the system’s stock firmware and bypassing Nintendo’s security - which could result in the Japanese company knocking at his door.
It’s an ongoing process for stacksmashing and Beckmann, as there is also the Game & Watch’s 128k of SRAM, 1.3 MB of external RAM, and only 1.1 MB of flash memory to consider. Nintendo’s device is clearly able to run Doom, however, the game features simplified textures and its memory allocation had to be altered. It was also mentioned that this was just the beginning of a project initiated by stacksmashing, as he works towards bringing more homebrew to the Game & Watch system in the near future.
If the refrigerator and pregnancy test mod didn’t impress you, then you can also watch another modder run Doom within Minecraft on a herd of sheep. Yes, you read correctly, Doom successfully ran on a herd of coded voxel sheep within Minecraft. This may be the winner of the trend to date for producing Inception levels of modding.
