Oculus co-founder, Nate Mitchell, has revealed that his first game since leaving Oculus will likely not be VR. This may come as a shock to some given his prominent involvement in the field, but Mitchell assures fans that he is not leaving virtual reality behind entirely.
Mitchell was the last co-founder of Oculus to leave the company, and went on to found Mountaintop Studios alongside some gaming industry veterans. Mountaintop Studios hasn’t announced any games yet, but it seems that fans can rule out a virtual reality game for the studio’s breakout title after Mitchell’s comments.
Mitchell emphasizes that Mountaintop has not left VR behind in any way, just that its first game will focus on more traditional gameplay. Given his passion for virtual reality, it’s pretty likely that the studio will release a VR title at some point in the future, though when is anyone’s guess.
So far, all fans know about the studio is that it plans to focus on multiplayer games, but that doesn’t necessarily rule out virtual reality either. Though few, there are some VR games which take a multiplayer approach. Hopefully as the technology becomes more affordable those titles will increase in number.
