Obsidian has just unveiled who will be cast in their upcoming small-scale survival game Grounded. Best known for their work on deep RPGs like Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and most recently The Outer Worlds, Obsidian has taken a new direction with their upcoming title. Grounded will be the studio’s first new IP since they were acquired by Microsoft, which was first revealed at XO19 in London.
Obsidian revealed on their site who will be lending their vocal talents to the main characters in their newest title Grounded. The cast includes industry veterans across games, animation, and film. The vocal talent includes Ozioma Akagha, from Runnaways and Teen Titans Go! as Willow; Josh Brenner of Silicon Valley and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as BURG.L; Charlet Takahashi Chung from Overwatch and Carmen Sandiego playing Hoops; Zachary Levi from Shazam! and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Wendell; Max Mittelman from Spider-Man and Final Fantasy VII Remake playing Pete; And finally Luke Youngblood from Community and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will play Max.
They also announced the addition of Michael Chu, who has worked on Overwatch, to help develop the game’s narrative. Grounded is set to release on Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 28.
While Obsidian has never made a cooperative survival game like Grounded before, they are very well-known for creating compelling characters and writing snappy dialogue. The tone and style of the trailers–and premise of the game itself–certainly falls in line with their whit, which makes us excited to hear what lines these characters will have as we attempt to survive the yard.
With such a strong lineup of vocal talent, the only concern is that the title won’t have enough of a narrative to really give these characters enough personality and growth. Bringing in Michael Chu to work on the narrative does imply they are giving that area of the survival game some focus, but until early access goes live, it remains unclear how it will all come together.
