Imagine what life would be like if your dog could fly. Now imagine what that life would be like if your dog not only flew but also could be ridden into battle like a dragon. And now imagine if that dog had realistic fur and better lighting effects so when it rained it actually looked like a wet dog.
That’s all included in No Man’s Sky’s Prisms update, out now on all platforms.
The biggest takeaway from Prisms is a complete visual overhaul that builds on the updated visuals that were added to No Man’s Sky with its next-gen update. “Virtually no part of the game has been left untouched,” wrote Hello Games’ Sean Murray (no relation, really) on the No Man’s Sky blog. “Our small team has enhanced the technology and the art all across the game to make the entire universe more vivid and beautiful than ever.”
Updated volumetric lighting and improved weather effects mean that wet surfaces will reflect light while light shafts break through cloudy skies. Improved particle effects make explosions and certain actions far more dynamic, while freighter interiors look better than ever thanks to screen space reflections making metallic surfaces sheen.
Since No Man’s Sky is a space exploration game, stars are important. That’s why there’s a new starfield with greater detail and more stars. Planets are now even more detailed than ever with a greater density of plants and objects in certain biomes, and new audio and visual effects dramatically improve the feeling of warping between planets.
DLSS has been added to PC players using Nvidia graphics cards which could double a player’s frame rate, according to Murray. Upgraded photo mode improves the depth of field and bloom options, and the Appearance Modifier has a new UI.
Oh, and there are flying companions now. That means you can tame and pet flying beetles, worms, butterflies, and various other alien species.
