No Man’s Sky fans are in a tizzy today after Hello Games surprise-dropped news of an impending update that will arrive next week. It’s called Origins, and nobody knows what it’s about, but everyone wants to find out so badly that it actually crashed No Man’s Sky’s website.
It all started earlier this morning when the real Sean Murray dropped a single tweet of an orange emoji. This sent the No Man’s Sky subreddit into a fit of orange-themed memes that is still raging as of the time of this writing.
A subsequent tweet revealing that he actually meant “origins” and not oranges then led so many people to No Man’s Sky’s latest news update that it crashed the site. Luckily, screenshots from the few people that were able to view it reveal what we’re in for.
“We know there is a huge appetite in the community for No Man’s Sky content, and the team has worked our socks off this year to deliver in difficult circumstances,” Murray wrote. “We have been quiet, but we are always listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about. This update will be another small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us.”
Along with a composite image of each update No Man’s Sky has received since release, the very last thumbnail shows what Origins will look like when it arrives next week. A helpful Redditor has blown up that image so we can get a better look, and it appears that Origins will have new structures to build, new planets to analyze, and above all, new customization options for the player’s avatar.
In No Man’s Sky, the player’s avatar has always been represented by their Exosuit–a fancy spacesuit that has lots of functionality but never lets us see what creature is actually inside. It’s always been assumed that the player is human, but it’s never actually revealed or even mentioned in-game.
It seems Origins will finally let the player take their helmets off. On the left appears to be a robot-like character, while the right avatar is very clearly of alien origin.
No Man’s Sky: Origin arrives next week. We don’t know when, but Sean is sure to update us all on Twitter when it happens and also provide us with the patch notes. Expect the site to crash at least one more time.
