In No Man’s Sky, you’ll find yourself jumping from star system to star system quite often. In order to do this, though, you’ll need to have a Hyperdrive, which requires fuel. There are two ways to fuel a Hyperdrive: Warp Cells and Warp Hypercores.
In this guide, we’ll outline all the ways to obtain both of these items, as well as anything you need to know about Hyperdrives and jumping systems.
5 Hyperdrives
Before you can think about fuelling your Hyperdrive, you’ll need to make sure you have one in the first place. Your first ship when you start the game will not have one, but after this, most ships you find will have one pre-installed.
Where to Find Hyperdrive Blueprints
For your first Hyperdrive, you’ll need to make your way through the opening quests to build it. Once you master how to build a base, you’ll be told to visit a local Space Station, where one of the NPCs inside will point you toward a Distress Beacon. Visit this location and you’ll find the blueprints for a Hyperdrive among the wreckage, specifically from the broadcast pod. The Hyperdrive requires 125 Chromatic Metal and five Microprocessors.
How to Find Chromatic Metal and Microprocessors
Chromatic Metal is found in a variety of ways, but this early in the game, your best bet is to find a Copper deposit, harvest 250 Copper, and then toss it in a refiner to make 125 Chromatic Metal.
Microprocessors can be found sometimes, but it’s often easier to just purchase them from the Trading Terminal at the local Space Station.
Once you’ve obtained the required materials, simply go to your Starship’s inventory menu and open the crafting menu to make the Hyperdrive.
4 Fuel Types
There are two different types of fuel that you can use in a Hyperdrive: Warp Cells and Warp Hypercores.
Warp Cells will (without upgrades or class bonuses) let you warp from one system to another per Cell — they basically count for one jump. Your Hyperdrive can hold five Warp Cells. This means you’ll need five to completely fuel it, which will then let you jump five times.
Warp Hypercores are a bit more powerful. These are the equivalent of five Warp Cells, completely filling your Hyperdrive and allowing you to (typically) jump five times.
3 Recipes
In order to craft your own fuel, you’ll need the recipes. Both Warp Cells and Warp Hypercores have their own crafting recipes, which can be obtained in different ways. Read on for more details on how to craft these items as well as how to find them.
Warp Cell Recipe
There are two ingredients in a Warp Cell: Antimatter and Antimatter Housing. You’ll have the recipe by default, but the ingredients used to make the Warp Cell have their blueprints that you’ll need to obtain. Your first batch of Antimatter and the recipe for the Housing will both be given to you by an Abandoned Terminal as part of the starting quest, Awakenings.
Use those to craft your first Warp Cell as the quest says and then warp to another system, where you’ll receive a new nav point that leads to a Trading Post. There, you’ll receive the recipe for Antimatter.
Warp Hypercore Recipe
In order to obtain the recipe for Warp Hypercores, you’ll need to find a Manufacturing Facility. These are buildings that can be found on many planets. You can stumble upon them, but it’s much more efficient to buy a Planetary Chart (Secure Site) from a Cartographer on a Space Station, or trade Navigation Data for one.
Once you locate the Facility, you’ll need to bust down the door with your weapon or your Starship’s weapon. Watch out for Sentinels, which won’t be happy about you doing this. Inside, you’ll need to deactivate the security system by solving a puzzle. Once you do this, you can choose a technology blueprint to learn, one of which is the recipe for the Warp Hypercore.
The recipe for a Warp Hypercore is one Antimatter and one Storm Crystal.
2 How to Obtain Warp Cells
There are a few ways to get your hands on Warp Cells. The main method is to just craft them yourself, from Antimatter and Antimatter Housing. However, they can be found or obtained in other ways, as well.
Crafting Warp Cells
First, here’s how you can craft the necessary ingredients to then craft a Warp Cell
Refining Warp Cells
You can use a refiner to make Warp Cells, which is probably the second most reliable method. You’ll need a Large Refiner, as there are three ingredients. The recipes use similar ingredients in differing numbers, which is very convenient. These combinations will turn into a Warp Cell in a Refiner:
Other Methods for Obtaining Warp Cells
You don’t always need to craft Warp Cells, though it is typically the easiest method to obtain them. There are some less reliable methods.
1 How to Craft Warp Hypercores
If you’d rather use Warp Hypercores, since they’re more powerful, you have two options: craft them, or earn them.
Crafting Warp Hypercores
To craft a Warp Hypercore, you’ll need to blueprint from a Manufacturing Facility. Then, you can craft them with one Antimatter and one Storm Crystal.
Earning Warp Hypercores
If finding Storm Crystals on an extreme-weather planet is too hard, there’s another way. Warp Hypercores are often a reward for a quest from the Nexus aboard the Anomaly. Many of these are a bit difficult to do solo, so you’ll need to find some friends to play with or join groups that form aboard the Anomaly.
