Thanks to the latest update to the ever-evolving No Man’s Sky, you no longer have to endure the cold reaches of space without a friendly pet by your side. Having a pet, even a virtual space alien pet, is a big responsibility though. They all have various stats and meters you need to monitor and tend to, so you should make sure that you have the absolute best companion you can get.
Rather than being stuck with whatever you get, you can actually manipulate the type of pet you’ll get by using a special machine. You don’t have to be a mad scientist to figure it out though; just follow our guide to gene re-sequencing to hatch your ideal pet.
A Guide To Gene Re-Sequencing
First things first: you need to get yourself an egg if you want to start messing around with its genes. To get an egg, you need to breed your pet by meeting a few conditions. First, you have to have had this companion for at least one full day. Second, they must be left on their home planet with high love and hunger meters. Finally, and you would skip this step if this wasn’t the case, you can’t already have six or more eggs.
With your egg, it is time to get to work. Take it to the Anomaly and find the brand new Egg Sequencer in the back right corner of the room as you face away from the exit. This is where things get interesting.
You have four slots, ignoring the one you place your egg into, that will alter what your pet will look and act like. This covers everything from height, weight, personality, and more. These slots are the Growth Hormone, Gene Splitter, Dye Injector, and Neural Calibrator. You can put just about anything into these slots and each item increases the potency of that catalyst.
Create Some Hideous (Or Gorgeous) Progeny
There are tons of possible options here, so this is where you can spend some time experimenting to see what materials will give you the traits you want. For some examples though, sodium, silver, and oxygen are great in the Growth Hormone slot if you want a big companion. In contrast, you might use dust and copper for smaller ones.
In terms of skin color, pure ferrite will make them orange and purple, antimatter white and red, the ammonia green, sodium brown, and uranium purple.
We suggest using walker brains for the Neural Calibrator if you want a loyal companion. But if you’d rather them be a little more…feisty, you can pump them up with salt or phosphorous. Kind and helpful pets will come from adding oxygen, carbon, or ferrite dust.
Eggs can be put back in the sequencer as many times as you want, so feel free to really get in deep and design your perfect pet before you go on to hatch it. Or you can just roll the dice and see what you get like this enormous dinosaur from one player.
