It’s true that Nioh 3 isn’t currently in development, but that certainly doesn’t mean it is an impossibility - in fact, it almost seems assured that there will be a Nioh 3 at some point in the future, but not necessarily any time soon.
This comes from our recent interview with Fumihiko Yasuda, Nioh series director and certified ninja. We asked Yasuda-san whether the team would be making a third instalment In the Nioh franchise in the near future, and he had this to say:
“In terms of a sequel right now, Team Ninja would like to focus on working on new titles, so there really isn’t a plan for Nioh 3 at this point. But after creating some new projects and gaining some new experience and skills from those new potential projects, I would like to go back to the series at some point, utilise all the experience and new skills that we gain from some new projects, and then potentially, go back into the series at that point, and create an even greater game to surpass Nioh and Nioh 2 and to create something even better.”
It definitely seems like Yasuda-san and Team Ninja is currently entirely focused on new projects, as well as bringing Nioh 2 to PC on February 5. But this news will likely come as a relief for those Nioh fans that thought the series was meeting an abrupt end with the upcoming Nioh Collection.
Nioh 2 is an incredibly difficult action game that Yasuda-san likens to “spicy food,” being an acquired taste. In our review of Nioh 2, we had to agree with the difficulty, saying:
“I enjoyed Nioh 2 even though I have a sneaking suspicion that it hates me. It practically ground my face into the dirt on multiple occasions and made me question whether I was having fun or if I had just discovered some latent masochistic tendencies. If you go into this game treating it like any other action RPG, or even like a standard FromSoftware title, you will be grievously punished for your hubris.”
Nioh 2 and the Nioh Collection is launching on February 5.
