Nintendo fans have been expecting a January Direct due to a leaked email that detailed the upcoming marketing campaign for an EA game called Fe. This Direct was highly anticipated, due to the 2018 lineup for the Nintendo Switch and 3DS currently being bare.

After teasing the fans for days on Twitter, Nintendo finally dropped a new Direct onto YouTube without much fanfare. This Direct was a “Mini” event that focused solely on upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch. Those who are looking for a lineup of brand new games will likely be disappointed, but there is a killer selection of ports coming to the system within the next six months.

Here are all of the announcements made during the Nintendo Direct Mini event!

More Wii U Ports

Reggie Fils-Aimé has previously stated that Wii U games would only receive ports to the Nintendo Switch if they had substantial new content. He seems to be keeping to this rule with the two new Wii U ports announced for the system.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition contains all of the content from both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. The Nintendo Switch version also includes new costumes based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the ability to play a split-screen multiplayer mode using two Joy-Cons. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition has a tentative “Spring 2018” release date.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze might be the most overlooked game on the Wii U. It is possibly the best game in the series and is in the running for being the best platform game of all time. The Switch version of Tropical Freeze has added Funky Kong to the game, who possesses a range of abilities that make the game easier. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be released on May 4th.

New DLC For Switch Games

Super Mario Odyssey is receiving a free update in February that adds a multiplayer mode called “Luigi’s Balloon World” where two players have to hide a balloon somewhere in the level. This update will also add new costumes and camera filters. While “Luigi’s Balloon World” isn’t that exciting, it does suggest that more free content is coming to the game. We may hopefully one day take a journey through Luigi’s Odyssey.

Pokkén Tournament DX is also receiving two paid DLC packs. The first one will be released on January 31st and it will add Aegislash as a playable fighter. Mega Rayquaza and Mimikyu will also appear as a support team. The second DLC pack will be released on March 23rd and it will add Blastoise as a playable character. Mew and Celebi will also appear as a support team.

New DLC was also announced for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which adds Donkey Kong to the game. Not much else was revealed about this DLC, save for the fact that it is coming in Spring. This DLC does open the possibility for more Nintendo characters to meet their Rabbid doppelganger, which means that the likes of Link and the Duck Hunt Dog aren’t safe.

New Mobile Ports/Indie Games

The Direct opened up with the announcement of a Nintendo Switch port of The World Ends With You. This was an RPG released for the Nintendo DS, though the Switch port of the game is based on the smartphone version of the game which only required one screen. The Switch port will also add a new post-game scenario.

The World Ends With You is one of the greatest RPGs ever made and you owe it to yourself to experience this amazing game if you haven’t already.

Fe and Celeste were also confirmed. These are upcoming platform games that are coming to pretty much every system. Fe is a gorgeous 3D platformer set in a world based on a Nordic forest, which is going to be released on February 16th. Celeste is a challenging 2D platformer that is going to be released on January 25th.

The previously announced port of Payday 2 was also given a February 27th release date, with a timed-exclusive character being added to the Switch version.

Actual New Games

It isn’t just ports that are coming to the Nintendo Switch, as Nintendo did announce a few brand new titles.

A new Mario Tennis game was announced for the Switch. Mario Tennis Aces is coming to the system sometime in Spring of 2018. The most promoted feature of this new game is a return of the story mode from the older Mario Tennis titles, which added an RPG feel to the games.

The latest game in the Ys series was also announced for a Summer release on the Nintendo Switch. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an action-RPG that is also being released on the PlayStation 4/Vita, as well as for Windows.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is a new fighting game that has a cast made up of female characters from SNK’s games. This title seems to be a spiritual successor to the SNK Gals’ Fighters games. This is a fighting game based on a tag team mechanic, though the Switch is hardly lacking in SNK fighting games.

Kirby Star Allies also received a release date of March 16th. This is the latest Kirby title, though it doesn’t look much different from the previous games in the series.

Prepare To Die! (On Nintendo Switch)

The Nintendo Direct closed with the announcement of Dark Souls Remastered coming to the Switch on May 25th. This is the first time that the series has graced a Nintendo console and its success may lead to Switch ports of Dark Souls II & III. The ability to play Dark Souls on a portable system is likely to be highly prized by fans, especially if they add some Nintendo-themed gear to the game (as was the case with Skyrim.) Dark Souls might be a seven-year-old game, but a lot of players might be lured back by the prospect of facing Ornstein & Smough with the Master Sword.

Those who were expecting some brand new games will likely be disappointed by this Direct, as are the people hoping for more information on certain aspects of the system (such as the online mode and Virtual Console.) It is still early on in the year and Nintendo proved in 2017 that they are especially good at keeping their hand close to their chest when it comes to upcoming games. This lineup of ports is likely just a taste of what they have planned for 2018.
