The Super Nintendo World theme park has been highly anticipated by video gamers and Mario fans alike since Nintendo teased that a Mario-themed park area would be coming to Universal Studios Japan back in 2015. Those plans were made official earlier this year with an official trailer promising the theme park would be ready to go in Summer 2020, just in time for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Unfortunately, those plans all changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, causing theme parks around the world to close and even prompting the postponement of the Summer 2020 Olympics.
With public health on everyone’s minds, it makes sense that, even when it comes to highly anticipated theme park featuring the likes no one has ever seen before, people are still concerned about the preventative measures companies like Nintendo are taking when it comes to theme park sanitation and safety.
Yesterday, June 26, Nintendo held their 80th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. During the event, an investor in the audience asked if Nintendo was planning on taking any additional precautions in light of the pandemic to ensure guest safety when Super Nintendo World eventually opened at Universal Studios Japan.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo game developer and head of the Super Nintendo World theme park project, answered the question by saying he was still waiting for Universal Studio’s official announcement when the park was ready to open. However, he ensured the audience that he and the team are currently and would continue to prioritize safety to ensure guests could come to the park with peace of mind.
While Miyamoto’s answer might not be as specific as wary guests might have been hoping, with so many unknown factors regarding the timeline of the pandemic and no official opening date for Super Nintendo World, it makes sense that the best answer Nintendo can currently offer is to simply wait and see.
Regardless of the uncertainties, it appears construction of Super Nintendo World is going strong. Latest updates from the park show a fully-built Bowser Castle, a running Yoshi, spinning coins, Pirahna Plants, and more.
Super Nintendo World is set to open sometime in 2021 in Universal Studios Japan.
