After roughly half a year of being closed, Nintendo NYC will be reopening its doors on August 7, 2020. On the store’s official Twitter page, Nintendo outlined some new regulations that will be in place to keep customers safe should they choose to enter the store. Obviously, marks will be required and the registers will be switching over to cashless payment methods only.
Nintendo NYC has been closed since March 17, 2020, when New York went into lockdown. It even suffered a bit of damage during the riots that happened in early June. With that issue settled and restrictions being relaxed throughout New York state, the store is able to return to regular business. Customers will just need to make sure they maintain a safe distance between each other, wear masks (!!!) and sanitize their hands before touching anything.
To gain entry to the store, customers will need to make a reservation through the official website. Windows will be open every half-hour and will allow a single guest with a +1. The store’s new hours will be Tuesday - Sunday, 11 am EST - 6:00 pm EST. That’s much shorter than what it used to be, but this is likely to curb major traffic from crowding the location.
I’m not sure I would recommend anybody go to Nintendo NYC right now, but if you happen to be in the city, it’s a pretty nice store. While relatively small and not really home to any special merchandise, the unique museum on the second floor showcases a ton of Nintendo history. The famous Game Boy that survived the Gulf War is present and there’s a rotating display of different subjects you can look at.
There’s also the massive screen Nintendo uses to screen Nintendo Direct presentations to the public. It can be a real trip to be surrounded by a hundred or so screaming fans that are losing their minds over the smallest of announcements. That’s clearly not going to be happening right now, but it’s something to look forward to for the future.
For now, at least you can rest easy in knowing that a small slice of gamer heaven is finally back in operation.
