Nintendo cannot catch a break with leaks recently, it seems. Plenty of behind-the-scenes evidence has given us insight into canceled Nintendo projects that never saw the light of day, despite the hard work put into them. From old Mario designs to exciting Donkey Kong adventures, Nintendo is always thinking of new ways to push the limits of their franchises.

What is even more exciting than game leaks, though? Hardware leaks. And according to a recent discovery, Nintendo was working on a portable successor to the GameCube – long before the Switch saw an official release.

The GameCube 2 Or GameCube Portable

LuigiBlood on Twitter revealed an inside look into Pokemon Emerald’s source code and leaked documents that revealed references to a portable GameCube. The console designs are shown above and showcase Nintendo’s push to make a console that would be compatible with their portable titles. What is interesting is the note about a GameCube with a dock that could connect to the TV, because this console pitch seemingly laid the foundation for the Nintendo Switch. If a portable GameCube isn’t enough to hold your interest, then hold on, because Nintendo was also planning a lot more.

Nintendo’s Xbox 360 & PS3 Killer

On Reddit, user GlaDOS_Aperture has revealed more inside looks into the canceled GameCube portable, as well as slides from the canceled Project Vegas. According to the documents, Project Vegas was Nintendo’s plan to create a console that would rival the then-upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Nintendo wanted to make a next-gen console to that served as a worthy, affordable successor to the GameCube – one that was ready to tackle improved graphics. Eventually, the project was scrapped, and Nintendo refocused efforts into the Wii. The slides above make it clear that Nintendo was still focused on getting a portable console out following the release of their next-gen console. Thus, the eventual Nintendo Switch was an ambitious goal that many at Nintendo had been working towards for nearly a decade, if not longer.
