In a weird way, Tetris 99 has become something of a marketing vessel for Nintendo. On random weekends during a month, the company will host an event dedicated to a new or upcoming release and players can earn a theme based on that. This has been happening since a few months after launch, with titles like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Splatoon 2, and Paper Mario getting special treatment. Sadly, those events only last for a few days, so many may have missed their chance to grab the themes.

OR SO YOU THOUGHT!

Nintendo has recently announced that it will be re-running a trio of events for players that may have missed out on some Tetris 99 themes. Specifically, you’ll be able to play in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Luigi’s Mansion 3, and Ring Fit Adventure events during the middle of August.

First up is Animal Crossing, which will be going on from August 14 - 16. After that, Luigi’s Mansion scares up some space between August 17 - 19. Lastly, Ring Fit will squat on over between August 20 - 22. Instead of the normal 100 points to nab a theme, players will only be required to gain 50 this time.

I know in one of Tetris 99’s previous updates, players were able to buy themes with tickets. Initially, these were only for themes specific to the paid DLC, but Nintendo added the option to buy event themes. That helped me get a few that I had missed, but I’ve been pretty diligent since then.

I would imagine all three of these themes are purchasable with tickets, but I can’t test for myself. At any rate, you won’t need to worry about grinding challenges to get them. Nintendo is rehosting the events and that’s awesome. This is likely being done because of the coronavirus pandemic and everyone being stuck inside.

Whatever the reason, more Tetris 99 is hardly a bad thing. I’m surprised Nintendo has promoted it so well over the last year. It surprised released with the launch of Nintendo’s online service and has done relatively well for itself. Now if we could just get some extra modes and possibly game-related content, I’d be able to shelf my copy of Tetris DS permanently.
