An ex-Retro Studios concept artist has talked about two rather intriguing cancelled Nintendo projects involving The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario.
The relationship between Nintendo and Retro has been lucrative. Retro developed the very successful Metroid Prime trilogy and had a hand in Mario Kart 7. The studio also developed Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze and is currently working on the highly-anticipated Metroid Prime 4.
Recently, concept art surfaced revealing two cancelled Nintendo projects from Retro Studios. One was for a Zelda action JRPG with a Sheik as the protagonist. The other was a title starring Boo, the ghost enemy from the Mario franchise. However, ex-Retro Studios artist Sammy Hall told IGN that he doubts “many at Nintendo proper saw much of any of this stuff. I was mostly put into a room like Milton from Office Space and tasked to brainstorm between other projects.” Hall also revealed that ex-Retro leads Mark Pacini, Todd Keller, and Kynan Pearson came up with the ideas.
According to Hall, the games were in pre-production and were scrapped the week the ex-Retro individuals “went to create their other studios.” Overall, it doesn’t sound like these two potential games made it very far.
It is always fascinating learning about cancelled video games. What would these games have contributed to their respective franchises? An action JRPG set in the Zelda universe is something many fans would probably like to see done someday.
