While this next tournament might be a little casual for those Fox only, Final Destination, no items Super Smash Bros. fans among us, those who enjoy playing as the Star Fox icon (as well as Samus Aran, among others) might want to get on board with this one.
Now, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is truly the game that keeps on giving. It’s strange to think that the hit Nintendo Switch title is already over a year and a half old. It feels like just yesterday that it was only a gleam in an Inkling’s eye, the “everyone is here!” slogan resounding around the Internet (as were fans’ excited howls at the reveals of King K. Rool and Ridley as playable fighters). Great times.
It may have released back in December 2018, but Ultimate’s momentum is showing no sign of slowing down. In the time since, we’ve seen enormous DLC character reveals like Banjo and Kazooie, as well as some… arguably less worthy picks. Still, whatever your reactions to the latest DLC fighter, ARMS’ Min Min, there’s no denying that the game’s been getting some great post-launch support.
A whole wealth of content had been added since, with fan-favorite modes like the Stage Builder, Home Run Contest, and a whole lot more beyond new characters. This is a feature-packed title and no mistake. Still, Sakurai and the team aren’t resting on their laurels, and Ultimate is still seeing regular events in the tournament mode too. The latest is titled Ace Pilots, Nintendo Soup reports, and is set to kick off on Friday July 17th.
These tournament events, as players will know, feature a selection of themed characters, making them the only fighters available to pick from to compete. Ace Pilots, appropriately enough, spotlights characters who command their own stylish craft. As the promo image above shows, Captain Olimar of Pikmin fame, Metroid’s Samus and the meme-tastic Captain Falcon from F-Zero are among the selectable fighters.
As always, players will receive a Spirit reward for taking part, of a greater rarity the further they progress. It’s important to note that such tournaments tend to consist of two four-player free-for-alls with the victors of each competing in a one-on-one match for the trophy, with items flying about throughout.
Serious Smash players, as we say, probably needn’t apply. Still, for a bit of something different in Ultimate this weekend, players can pick their favorite playable pilots and jump into the chaos!
