If you never even heard about the Nightmare Creatures remake that has been in the works for a few years, you’re not alone… which makes the cancellation of the project even less surprising.
According to a tweet from game developer, Albino Moose Games, who had been working on the title since 2017, the remake has been officially shelved. No details were provided as to why the shelving of the project occurred.
For the unfamiliar, Nightmare Creatures was a survival horror game released in 1997 for PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo 64, while a sequel was released three years later. Players controlled one of two characters, Ignatius or Nadia, as they worked to uncover the secrets of a deadly cult that was conducting sinister experiments and unleashing their superhuman monstrosities - the titular nightmare creatures - throughout the streets of London. The game takes place in the year 1666, and features the gothic horror tropes and the types of weapons - such as pistols, mines, and firebombs - that one might expect.
It turns that a movie adaptation was actually announced in late 2000, but - like the remaster now - was also shelved before going into production.
While one of the PlayStation’s premier titles at the time (I still remember being freaked out by the dark mood and monsters), Nightmare Creatures didn’t quite have the pull that other games in the genre possessed at the time, such as Resident Evil. Apparently, it still doesn’t.
