Angus is one of the main characters you’ll interact with in the somber adventure game Night In The Woods. He stands out for his unique and serious personality that can make him seem like a kind, wise soul one moment and a stubborn egotist the next.
Players casually running through the game might miss some of the more subtle details about this interesting character. Whether it’s insight about his background, quirks in his character, or personal beliefs, here are some things you might not know about the Big Guy.
10 Abused As A Child
The darkest part of Angus’s life was when he was a child. His father would strike him, but he considered his mother’s punishments far worse as she’d withhold food, lock him in the pantry overnight, and generally neglect him.
It’s understandably a sore subject that has shaped much of who Angus is for better and for worse. While he’s made incredible strides in overcoming that abuse it still haunts him and affects him going into adulthood.
9 Likes Cooking/Baking
Playing the game players will notice that Angus likes to cook and bake a lot. It seems he always has some snack, treat, or meal for others to enjoy and makes a point of producing it to be shared.
A lot of this has to do with his mother’s abuse and making food is Angus’s primary coping method when stressed. Many in the fanbase believe that another reason he shares the food he makes with others is because he wants to make sure that if someone is secretly in a situation similar to his that they can always have something to eat.
8 He’s An Atheist
Whenever he was locked in the pantry by his mother, Angus would spend the time trying to telepathically connect with neighbors to ask for help or use telekinesis to unlock the door. As the years passed and the powers never manifested he became convinced that not only is the paranormal a farce, but that there is no higher power.
That being said he’s never one to ridicule or mock others who do believe in God or religion and will speak with others about it openly and respect.
7 Interested In The Paranormal
Interestingly, while he doesn’t believe in a higher power or the paranormal he still possesses a strong interest in the paranormal. It could be that this interest is in an effort to disprove or understand the seemingly unexplainable, given his membership in a skeptic society regarding the paranormal and his refusal to assume unexplained acts are supernatural in nature.
Whatever the reason for this obsession he spends in an inordinate amount of time thinking, researching, and theorizing about the subject of paranormal activities.
6 Sings Like Dicky Barrett
While not official in the game, one of the creators of Night In The Woods, Scott Benson, has stated that Angus’s singing voice is very similar to that of Dicky Berrett’s the lead singer from the band the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
If true this gives Angus an interesting layer to his character as he’d have a great singing voice to belt out during the band mini-games. As it stands, he doesn’t have a singing voice to speak of and players are left to imagine how it must sound based on what Scott said.
5 Has Asthma
Angus has a severe case of asthma. This is evidenced by a brief comment where he discusses having a strong inhaler for emergencies. If players pay attention in the game they’ll notice that Angus lags behind the other characters given he has a slower running speed.
The cause of this asthma is unclear, some fans have speculated this may have to do with what happened to him in childhood, but it could just as likely have been something he was born with. It’s not something he talks about often so it’s unknown what the cause is.
4 Ran Cross Country In Junior High
Angus participated in Cross Country when he was in Junior High in spite of having asthma. He never won any races or received any awards given his asthma was so bad, in fact, he’s not known to have ever finished any races.
It’s unknown why he had the desire to participate in Cross Country in the first place. Perhaps it was an effort to curb his asthma through exercise, prove his parents wrong, or prove something to himself. In any case, he doesn’t appear to engage in athletics anymore.
3 Knows The Constellations
Throughout the game the main character Mae will tease Angus about his knowledge of astronomy and constellations claiming at one point in their childhood he pointed out all the visible constellations to her and told the stories behind them.
This is a reference to a moment in the supplemental game Longest Night where Angus does precisely this. Some fans speculate his knowledge of astronomy is tied to his interest in the paranormal.
2 Only Character Whose Family Is Never Seen
While family plays a large role in the game and the player sees the family members of every other character, Angus’s parents are the only family members mentioned that aren’t ever seen.
This is hardly surprising given the nightmare they put Angus through and his unlikelihood of wanting anything to do with them. Though it is interesting that there are never any pictures or encounters without Angus that occur, whether or not they’re still in Possum Spring is unknown.
1 Lots Of Self Esteem Issues
Because of his rough childhood, Angus is an understandably shy and reserved person, unfortunately part of that is because he has really low self-esteem. Being around his supportive and loving friends has helped quite a bit, but it’s proving to be a long and slow process.
A few times he mentions feeling like he’s often a failure and at one point he mentions he lacks ‘ursidae pride’ over the fact that he’s a bear. It’s something he doesn’t talk about often and it seems to affect him on a regular basis.
