In a recent interview, co-creator of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine show, Dan Goor, shed some light on the future plans for the show. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is wrapping up season seven and has big plans for potential storylines for season eight. The hit NBC show has always addressed current events and social issues with comedic relief. And now the show may address the world-wide coronavirus pandemic as part of a storyline in season eight.
Dan Goor realizes the possible ramifications of addressing the virus in a comedy, but the writers are looking at ways to be relatable and maintain the show’s core values. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is about a team of detectives in the NYPD who solve crimes from stolen diamonds to elaborate drug smuggling. Goor addresses the fact that New York is home to the biggest outbreak in the United States. “But the question is how they have been affected by the virus and the pandemic as New York City residents and as first responders in New York City. How do we keep the show funny?” Goor said in the interview.
Goor believes the show could feature the coronavirus as the main storyline of season eight, but has also looked at making it a minor storyline for a couple episodes. The show is currently in early stages of planning for the next season. Only one virtual meeting has been held with the writers, in which they pitched different scenarios like the coronavirus being cured in two weeks.
Goor also says it’s more likely that the show will take a more realistic approach like addressing issues that stem from society’s recover from the virus. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has addressed many issues like racism, sexuality, and the justice system and continues to shed light on issues that affect many people. It may be a slightly longer wait, but season eight is sure to reference current events with tons of laughs spread throughout.
