Last month, Game Rant posted a bunch of new screens for the Star Trek’s upcoming entrance into the MMORPG genre and at the time the graphics look very dated from what we were seeing. However, we thought we’d wait until seeing new gameplay footage before passing judgement on said graphics.

Well, now we have the brand new trailer for Star Trek Online and you can see for yourself how it’s shaping up after the jump.

My observations:

  • That narrator talks too slow graphics look dated, especially for a space sim that doesn’t require many environmental objects and textures combat is very choppy seems like a single player game, not much MMO or co-operative feeling from what I’ve seen.

So far, I’m slightly unimpressed and that’s a shame. When first hearing about this game, it sounded awesome that you could share a ship with friends, walk around it and man the different stations. Now, everyone simply flies around solo and you can have an away team of other humans but I don’t see the practicality of that just yet - getting four-five ships together to form one away team?. Will this turn out to be a Massively Single Player Experience?

It feels like Starfleet Command meets EVE Online but maybe a step backwards.

If everyone’s a captain of their own ship, how do they come together as an away team? a 4-captain away team? I’m intrigued to find out more and hope this game breaks some boundaries for the MMO genre. Trek’s always had a little place in my heart and I hope this game brings that feeling for the players.

Q: How will I be able to play with my friends?

A: In space, you can form teams and do missions together. Space battles will occur between multiple player and NPC vessels. When you do a ground mission, the mission owner can build an away team that consists of other players. Outside of combat, there will be numerous community building features, locations, hubs and events that will bring players together.

Again, I’ll give this a shot out of curiosity but I have some worry. What do you think about the game and trailer?

What does give me hope are the story elements and episodic-style gameplay. I’m hoping this turns out great for the fans and players.
