The New Pokemon Snap is an exciting revival of a fan-favorite Nintendo 64 game. It takes players to the Lental Region to explore the wilds and take photographs of all manner of Pokemon in their natural habitat.
There are over 200 Pokemon in the New Pokemon Snap. Unlike the mainline games, you can’t catch the Pokemon and add them to a collection. They are allowed to stay in their natural environment and are merely observed. That said, there are 898 Pokemon in existence, and many of people’s favorites were left out. With that in mind, which Pokemon should be added to the New Pokemon Snap in updates and/or expansions?
10 Lucario
Lucario is one of the more famous Pokemon ever. It’s the Fighting and Steel-type Aura Pokemon. It evolves from Riolu. It’s a Generation IV Pokemon that had its own movie and popped up in Super Smash Bros.
It would also just be cool to see how this Pokemon operates in its natural environment. Given Lucario’s anthropomorphic design and typing, it’s kind of hard to imagine how this Pokemon behaves when it’s not in a battle. Seeing a Lucario chilling in either a forest or cave would give some insight into this fairly mysterious Pokemon.
9 Butterfree
Butterfree is one of the most famous Bug-type Pokemon in existence. It was one of Ash’s signature Pokemon in the original series, and it’s also a very pretty Pokemon capable of emitting sparkling dust that can really add to the razzle-dazzle of Butterfree.
It’s an odd omission for New Pokemon Snap. Seeing a swarm of Butterfree streaking across the sky and spreading a shining dust cloud in the wind.
8 Drapion
Drapion is a Generation IV Dark and Poison-type Pokemon that evolves from the Bug and Poison-type Skorupi. It’s classified, amazingly, as the Ogre Skorp Pokemon. Drapion is a pretty creepy-looking beast that would add something startling to the New Pokemon Snap experience.
New Pokemon Snap shouldn’t be a horror game, but seeing a cartoonish Drapion chasing after the player character would make for an exciting encounter.
7 Dragapult
Dragapult is a Dragon and Ghost-type Pokemon that is from the Generation VIII games, Sword & Shield. It evolves from Drakloak and Dreepy. Notably, Dragapult is known for shooting Dreepy out of its horns like torpedoes.
That is something that would be genuinely interesting to see in Dragapult’s natural habitat. Given that it’s a Ghost-type, it would also generally be interesting to see how these Pokemon behave and where they live (or unlive)? In either case, watching Dragapult casually firing Dreepy at one another would be a fascinating site.
6 Zacian & Zamazenta
This is another very odd omission for New Pokemon Snap given that Zacian and Zamazenta are the mascot Legendary Pokemon for Sword & Shield respectively. Those are the most recent mainline games at the time of New Pokemon Snap’s release, so one would think both would be included.
Seeing them in the wild would be awesome. The player could watch Zacian and Zamazenta pick up their Rusted Sword and Rusted Shield, transforming into their Crowned forms, and then sparring with one another.
5 Rayquaza
One of the Legendary Pokemon from Generation III, Rayquaza has one of the coolest designs in all of the franchise. It’s like a futuristic version of a traditional Eastern dragon, and it rules the skies over the Hoenn Region.
Spotting Rayquaza streaking across the open sky would make for a brilliant site in New Pokemon Snap. Maybe they could build a whole DLC expansion around hunting down Rayquaza and some of the other Generation III Legendary Pokemon.
4 Groudon & Kyogre
Groudon and Kyogre are the mascot Legendary Pokemon for Generation III’s Ruby & Sapphire games. Groudon is the avatar of the land, and Kyogre is the avatar of the sea. They are eternally battling to expand their territories, and Rayquaza has to tame them from time to time.
Being these primordial Pokemon tied to their terrain and ecosystem, Groudon and Kyogre would be really cool to discover emerging from their domains to intimidate the player while not shying away from getting their pictures taken.
3 Greninja
Greninja is another odd omission given how popular this Generation VI Starter Pokemon was. It has also been featured in Super Smash Bros and even received a unique Ash-Greninja form thanks to the Pokemon’s special bond with Ash in the anime.
Greninja was even a major part of the Detective Pikachu movie, where audiences got to see an unnervingly realistic rendering of this frog-shinobi. In any case, Greninja deserves to get a spotlight in the New Pokemon Snap.
2 Gyarados
Arguably the most glaring omission of the entire game, Gyarados sadly did not get a scene in the New Pokemon Snap despite the presence of Magikarp. Gyarados had one of the most memorable encounters in the original Pokemon Snap, with the player being able to knock a Magikarp into a waterfall and watch it emerge as a Gyarados.
Gyarados is another very popular Pokemon, and it would have been a lot of fun to watch this monster snarl at a camera. Maybe he’ll get dropped in through an update.
1 Arceus
Wouldn’t it be cool to take a picture of a god? Arceus is the godhead of all Pokemon, and one could only imagine how the player could coax Arceus into emerging. It could make for a stunning secret level.
Given the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Arceus game, it isn’t too hard to imagine a New Pokemon Snap DLC coming out later this year that features Arceus prominently. Hopefully, this will happen.
