A new teaser for the Monster Hunter movie has revealed that one of the most iconic beasts from the series is appearing in the film, as Rathalos will be one of the threats faced by the heroes.

Rathalos is the mascot of the Monster Hunter series and has appeared in almost every entry in the franchise. It’s a giant red wyvern that loves to swoop down on unwary hunters and inflict a deadly poison with its claw attacks. Rathalos is so popular that it was chosen to represent the series in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an assist trophy/boss. The Monster Hunter fighter in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite also uses gear forged from the bodies of slain Rathalos, except in her premium DLC outfits.

It was previously revealed that Diabolos would be appearing in the Monster Hunter movie, and it will now be joined by Rathalos. Director Paul W.S. Anderson revealed a new teaser clip of Monster Hunter during an interview as part of the New York Comic-Con digital event. The clip shows a Rathalos tearing the wing off a plane, while Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her team look on in horror.

Anderson revealed during the interview that this is a new version of Rathalos that was created specifically for the Monster Hunter movie. According to Anderson, this is a Greater Rathalos and it’s bigger and nastier than the ones seen in the game. It’s possible that this version of Rathalos could make it into future games, such as the upcoming Monster Hunter Rise for Nintendo Switch.

We know from the synopsis of the Monster Hunter movie that it involves a team of soldiers from our world arriving in the dimension from the video games. The conventional weapons used by marines have no effect on the monsters, so the team needs to learn how to use the weapons of the hunters. The scene of the plane being attacked by the Rathalos is something that would never happen in the video games, which is why it’s so awesome to see it come to life on the big screen.

Monster Hunter will be released on December 30, 2020.
