Square Enix just announced a surprising new Kingdom Hearts game that takes the franchise to a completely different genre.
Surprise! There’s a new Kingdom Hearts game coming, and we’re not talking about the mobile-only Dark Road. Square Enix just dropped a trailer for Kingdom Hearts: Memory of Melody, a completely new game that we had absolutely no idea was coming.
Well, we had a slight warning. A promo image got leaked to Reddit yesterday that revealed the game’s name. But other than that, Memory of Melody came completely out of nowhere, and we’re still playing catch-up to figure it out.
The trailer is entirely in Japanese, but we can still get the gist just by watching it. It’s a rhythm game for sure, with players taking control of classic Kingdom Hearts characters in what appears to be a romp through various levels from all three main Kingdom Hearts games. The trailer starts us off on Destiny Island before moving to Agrabah with Aladdin and then Olympus with Hercules.
Judging by the gameplay and the name, Memory of Melody is going to be trip down memory lane, replaying old Kingdom Hearts content through the lens of a rhythm game. We don’t expect the gameplay to be groundbreaking, but it’s an interesting new way to get a recap on the story in Kingdom Hearts so far.
However, it looks like Memory of Melody isn’t just about nostalgia. After the gameplay portion, the trailer opens up to a more cinematic experience where we see Ansem in a lab coat and Kairi summoning her key blade to take on a mysterious foe wearing the black robe of Organization XIII. Will Memory of Melody add more to Kingdom Hearts’ convoluted story, or will we once again be left with more questions than answers?
Probably the second one. Kingdom Hearts: Memory of Melody is set to arrive later in 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and the Nintendo Switch worldwide.
