The next few years is already host to a range of terrifying upcoming horror games and one more just made the list, as developer Fat Dog Games releases a teaser trailer for its newest title, Apparition. The first-person survival horror will see fans tasked with documenting ghost activity in a haunted American forest - Devil’s Tramping Ground in North Carolina.

As shown in the new trailer, players can actually communicate with the dead using a Ouija board to allow the spirits to answer questions. A screenshot on the game’s Steam page reveals the player asking for help, so it’s possible that, unlike in traditional horror titles, not every ghost found in Apparition will be a hostile presence.

The player will step into the shoes of an unnamed paranormal activity reporter who will spend the night fighting for more evidence of ghosts, as well as for his own life. Much like in the popular Outlast franchise, players will be able to make use of their trusty video camera, although they are also shown holding a candle from time to time. Every bit of paranormal activity documented with the protagonist’s video camera and voice recorder in Apparition will reward players with additional points, which are shown on the Global Player Board.

Unsurprisingly, this hunt for the unknown will not be a safe adventure for the journalist, and the developer claims the forest is occupied by demons. Towards the end of the trailer, we get a brief look at what happens when the player is unlucky enough to get spotted.

Demons and ghosts won’t be the only thing the player has to worry about either, as wild animals will inhabit the forest and might not take too kindly to an intrusive presence. Unlike with the paranormal entities, however, players won’t get points for documenting regular animals, and the protagonist doesn’t appear to have any way to fight back.

According to the game’s Steam page, Apparition is currently slated to release in the second quarter of next year, so horror fans will have to wait a little while to get their hands on this intriguing-looking game. In the meantime, we’ve put together a list of currently-available horror games that you might have missed over the years, but are still very much worth a play.

Apparition is due to release in Q2 2018, exclusively for PC.
