When fans of the original Digimon series heard about the reboot of Digimon Adventure, they were ecstatic. That excitement is still very much alive, but now it seems that the Digimon reboot isn’t afraid to step away from its source material and tell its own stories. Nothing makes this more clear than the introduction of the Holy Digimon.
Episode 5 of the Digimon Adventure reboot just aired, and with it came a set of 7 Digimon called the Holy Digimon. Though the series has diverged from the original in the past, this is easily the biggest change which will result in some major plot differences moving forward.
For context, there have always been Digimon which were seen as holy in nature such as Seraphimon, Angemon, and Angewomon, but they were never referred to as a group specifically as Holy Digimon. It seems as though they will be playing an important role in the revamped plot of this series.
Essentially what this episode has done is laid the groundwork for the expansion of Digital World’s mythology. A lot of these themes were present in the original anime but were never delved into too deep, likely because the target audience was a good deal younger than it is now. With the official introduction of these Holy Digimon, a lot of older fan theories have been confirmed in a concrete manner, and many are theorizing about what the future of the show will be.
There were also a few distinct changes made to the DigiDestined’s Digimon as well. In the original anime, Agumon, Gabumon, Tentamon, and the others were essentially created to accompany the DigiDestined, but in this version, it is implied that they are reincarnations of the Warrior Digimon that aided the Holy Digimon and fought back the darkness years ago.
This is a pretty cool twist and gives a little more depth to these characters, but also has interesting implications for Patamon and Gatomon as well. Many are theorizing that these two Digimon will end up being the reincarnations of two of the Holy Digimon, Seraphimon and Ophanimon.
All of this is working to set up the new Digimon Adventure to be really epic, and it is great that the show is taking its time reintroducing the world, plot, and characters in its own way rather than rushing through things assuming that its viewers know what’s going on. Episode 6 should expand on all of these details even more.
Digimon Adventures is airing now.
