Fortnite’s Doomsday event earlier this week appears to have caused a glitch that has led to some players now seeing the game in first-person.

Fortnite’s Doomsday event, dubbed “The Device”, was a huge success. Although Epic capped the in-game capacity at 12 million players — a cap that was hit well before the event started — another 8.4 million people watched it all go down via YouTube and Twitch. The event featured Midas’s Device altering the storm, maybe forever, and cutscenes that have raised a lot more questions than answers.

The cutscenes transported players to an office. During the third visit, a well-dressed Jonesy enters and asks what they’re doing there. He also seems very confused when he discovers the players can hear him. No word on what all that means just yet, but it implies Fortnite’s island is perhaps some sort of experiment akin to The Truman Show, and the players are the subjects.

Not only did the cutscenes reveal a never before seen area of Fortnite to players, but they were also able to see it from a different perspective. Through the eyes of the avatar they use on the island via first-person, rather than looking at them from behind in third-person. As demonstrated in the clip below, it seems that first-person mode didn’t revert back to third-person for every player.

What we’re assuming is a glitch has led to the alternative perspective sticking around for some. However, it appears to be a little more than a glitch. There are custom animations for first-person Fortnite which suggests it may soon be a permanent feature. Or perhaps it will be a new LTM introduced at some point during Season 3.

Some who have been made aware of the glitch, and potential switch, have already raised concerns with first-person becoming a permanent feature. Even in its glitch form it clearly gives the player blessed with it an advantage over those stuck with a regular old third-person view. It’s also not clear how it would impact Fortnite’s building mechanics and could obstruct the pickaxe from view. If it is going to be rolled out in a major way, we’d hope Epic would have considered these things.
