Once upon a game, THQ Games was set to develop an official Avengers game for the Xbox 360 (and, presumably, PS3). Set in a first-person perspective, it would have featured the current lineup of MCU stars circa 2011 and coincide with the release of the monumental film almost a decade ago. For one reason or another -likely due to THQ’s money problems-, the project was canceled and Marvel titles languished in development hell for some time.
Thanks to a discovery by ObscureGamers, new footage of the Avengers game has surfaced online and it gives us our best look at the game yet. We’re immediately treated to the likes of Thor, Hulk, and Captain America through Iron Man’s visor. While the environments are rather bland and unfinished, the core mechanics seem to be mostly realized at this point.
Apart from being in first-person, we aren’t sure what form the game would take. The footage below looks like a single-player campaign, but some speculation has stated that a multiplayer component was also being developed. With AI allies following the player around, it’s possible that a co-op mode would have rounded out the game’s available features.
If you’d like a better breakdown of what this Avengers title would have been like, a video by video game historian Liam Robertson shines some light on details about the game’s development. Needless to say, it doesn’t seem like first-person would have been the best fit for each character. Hulk, in particular, looks like an absolute nightmare to control.
What is more saddening about this video is that it does show some potential. The more linear nature of the game could have led to some creative battles that would have utilized each of the character’s abilities in combat. Mixed with a system to change characters, there’s potential for a different take on what Marvel Ultimate Alliance provides.
At least Marvel is more open to doing video game adaptations now. With the wild success of 2018’s Spider-Man on PS4 and Square Enix’s Avengers game looking to cause a storm, we might still yet get our own Marvel Video Game Universe going.
