The new Borderlands 3 seasonal event has just started and comes with a large dose of ’80s nostalgia. Revenge of the Cartels will be running from April 23 until June 4 and features new baddies, new locations, and new loot. In other words, more of the same, but with brighter colors.

The new Villa Ultraviolet location is the highlight of the event. You’ll have to find your way there and take down the cartel boss, Joey Ultraviolet. It won’t be easy because there are also three different cartel gangs battling for the villa and when one is taken down, another will rise to take its place. During the event, there will also be some limited-time events to get skins and other cosmetic items.

While the event will no doubt please fans, the ’80s theming is a little tired. The cheesy title sums it up. Gearbox is telling us to revisit the good ol days of bright lights and cocaine trafficking. To make us feel at home there’s even the obligatory Scarface/Vice City ripoff villa complete with red walls and fountains. Names like Villa Ultraviolet and Joey Ultraviolet feel similarly on the nose. Yes, there’s lots of purple, we get it.

’80s nostalgia has already worn out its welcome and adding worn-out cliches doesn’t help. Then again, Borderlands revels in a certain type of trashiness. If Borderlands is your jam, chances are you’re already fighting through the villa and collecting your bright loot.
